Squeezebox and iTunes

Squeezebox and iTunes - 01/29/08 05:53 AM

I recently purchased a RR2150 and am considering a Squeezebox instead of purchasing a new CD player. My major concern is that I know the Squeezebox does not work with songs purchased from the iTunes store and protected with Apple's DRM. I am wondering if anyone with a Squeezebox has tried it with Apple's Plus songs that are recorded at 256 and not protected by DRM.

I am a Squeezebox owner, but alas, not an iTunes user. Check the Slim Devices wiki first: http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?BeginnersGuideToiTunes

Then, you may want to go to the plug-ins page to see if there are any 3rd party solutions: http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?PluginsAudio

Actually, I contacted Logitech's corporate tech support and received the following somewhat non-precise answer about Apple's plus songs.

"Regarding your question, the Squeezebox or Duet will play music files in the following audio formats:

"Formats natively supported by the Squeezebox include MP3, FLAC, WAV/AIFF, and WMA (CBR & VBR). There's also non-native support for AAC (M4A, not M4P), Apple Lossless, WMA lossless, Ogg Vorbis, plus other obscure formats like MusePack and Monkey's Audio.

"As long as these files do not have the DRM attachment, the Squeezebox or Duet will play them.

As you will note there is not a specific answer, unless Apple plus songs are encoded as M4A. Thats why I hoped someone on this forum might know the answer.

As I understand it, unprotected songs (iTunes Plus) are .m4a files.

Gonk:

Thanks for a clear answer. I am not sure why Logitech couldn't have provided this info.

Clears my mind about a possible Squeezebox or Duet purchase.
