Klipsch RF5 or 7 with 950/770 - 03/16/04 11:19 AM

I am new to this HT stuff, and am very interested in going the seperates route. I have two questions for all you outlaws out there:
1. Regarding the 950/770 combo, are you getting quality equal to other similarly priced systems, or is the quality of the gear more along the lines of higher priced stuff? ie-if it is equal to a $2500 receiver, might the receiver be a better choice?
2. I am interested in using Klipsch RF5 or 7's for my mains, still like stereo music! Anyone out there experience this setup? Most interested in sound quality. Is this setup considered to be too bright?

Any comments would be appreciated.

I like the idea of the Outlaws selling direct, hope that I will become one soon!

The 950 is very comparable to the similarly priced pre/pros (such as the Adcom, Rotel, Sherbourn, and other pre/pros in the $1000-$1400 or so price range). Likewise, the 770 and the other Outlaw amps are a great value in amps. A $2500 receiver would probably not top the 950/770 combo, and it's also important to consider the other reasons people have historically chosen between receivers and separates. The receiver can minimize the space required to get everything in your equipment rack, but by going with separates you can easily upgrade the pre/pro in a few years and keep the amp -- making that upgrade much less expensive than replacing an entire receiver. Of course, you also need an extra handful of interconnects to go with separates.

Speakers are a subjective matter. I'd recommend demo'ing the Klipsch's if you haven't already (disregarding associated equipment). If you like them, they should work fine with the 950. A search through Outlaw to Outlaw, You System Saloon, and Model 950 areas of the forum may turn up some other RF5/RF7 users. Also, some people have elected to use the 7100 with Klipsch speakers in lieu of the 770 because the horn speaker design is so efficient. The 770 will certainly work very well and would offer flexibility in the future if you decided to upgrade to less efficient speakers, so I wouldn't necessarily rule the 770 out.

Gonk is right, The 770 or 7100 will work fine with the klipche speakers. I use 2 Cornwall II speakers with rear bipolars & klipche center speaker & an Outlaw sub. I get great sound & plenty of volumn from my 7100 due the high sensitivity of Klipche. I would choose the Outlaw again

I use Klipsch KLF30's as my mains. If you are moving up from the receiver camp, you should notice big improvement going to seperates. I can only comment on the 950 with Klipsch as I have B&K amp, but I find the 950 to be very neutral and excellent value.

I have Klipsch KG 3.2s front and back, and a KV 2 and 3 for centers. With 125 wpc Parasound amps, in a very large open room, -15 on the 950 is loud enough to render conversation impossible, even 2 feet away. The sound is, to me, incredible, both for HT and music.

The Klipsch speakers you list are far better (or, at least newer) than my 3.2s, so I think you would like the set up.
