Usernames...... - 01/22/04 10:13 PM

I notice some pretty interesting usernames in the Outlaw forums. I think it would be interesting for folks to share some of the meaning behind their names. Any takers?

Harp795 = Last name Harper, 795 is my college fraternity (Lambda Chi Alpha) initiation number. Can't seem to let the good College years get too far away!!!

My roommates and I named my college computer "Gonk" because it looked like the droid in Star Wars by the same name (it was a 486 from late 1992 in a huge boxy tower, weighed a ton). I borrowed the name as a username at a computer game news site called ShackNews (back when it was ShugaShack) a year or two before Outlaw set up the saloon.

Re: Usernames...... - 01/23/04 12:40 AM

Well, the "Broon" part comes from a once long time producer for my favourite band, RUSH. He was a good ol' Scotsman named Terry Brown but in his thick Scottish accent he pronounced it "Broon." A classical guitar intro to one of Rush's songs is called BroonsBane.

I've had several things in my life become the "bane" of my existence over the years and I won't bore you guys with the details so I just put the 2 of them together. I've been using BroonsBane for a long time now...almost my alter ego!

I like the name because both parts have some personal meaning for me.

It's actually the name of a song that mean to "seperate." Since I own Outlaw "seperates," I thought the name was fitting.

Broonesbane,

I love that song by Rush. I think it's the intro before the song "Trees". Great songs!

One of the first DVD's I got with really good surround was the Eagles - Hell Freezes Over DVD which has some very nice surround. When I needed a login to represent my new Outlaw status "Desperado" seemed obvious.

Re: Usernames...... - 01/23/04 10:59 AM

I had to think of a frat big brother name in college and the frat is alpha phi alpha. In college, I was studying engineering and always working on projects and my roomates always called me einstein because I had a full lab set up in the apartment. So, alphanstein. I kept using it after finding out that trying to get a email on yahoo was too complicated using my initials, so now, everywhere I go, alphanstein is usually available for a handle.

Nostalgia because I've got a soft spot in my heart for old video games systems. I wrote an Intellivision emulator, and my wife named it "Nostalgia."

I'm a manager of an espresso shop.
Thus, I'm a barista.
One of my customers is a musician and wrote a song called "The Baristaman" for me.
It stuck.

Icky miky: sound and fury, signifying nothing (although I never liked that mouse)!

“There is unrest in the Forest; there is trouble with the trees.
For the Maples want more sunlight, and the Oaks ignore their pleas”.

Trees into LaVilla Strangiato - doesn't get any better than that.

"and the trees are all kept equal...by hatchet, axe and saw." Good thing the song doesn't creep in this petty pace to the last syllable of recorded time.

Man I had you pegged for a boat builder or a yachtsman. You mean you are just clinging onto the fantasies of youthful indiscretion?
I am glad to hear your handle isn't related to popcorn stuck in your teeth though!

I was attending a PC Lan Party back in '98 when Unreal launched. Spoonman by Soundgarden was playing. It stuck in my head and I hummed it all night, and after a while, the guys started calling me Spoonman. Simple enough I guess. It's been my online nick since then

My name is Bill (William) and my wife's name is Scarlett. A lot of login places we are Will Scarlett (Robin Hood), but many times the name is taken. Also, I call my wife Scary because she is so good looking that it scares me!

My college band nickname. Any similarity with a basketball star turned senator is coincidental.

i just tried to pick a name that sounded like somthing an outlaw would go by and i was only 17 when i picked it, which makes me one of the younger people on this forum. by the way, kugumby, what KU are you refering to?

Re: Usernames...... - 02/02/04 01:18 PM

Yet another Rush reference. I actually had to haul the album (in this case it was the vinyl one) out to prove to my gifrlfriend that it wan't some kind of stud-name used to pick up women online.

Bill in Texas, I'm still laughing over that one...

ROCK CHALK JAYHAWK!!!
I loved hearing the "NIT" chant at the end of the Mizzou game last night.

Born and raised in Lake Quivira (right outside of Overland Park). I always wondered if thats what the KU part of your name meant. Good to have another Jayhawk Gunslinger on the forum.

Re: Usernames...... - 02/06/04 03:23 PM

OK, so here's the real story...

I've played bass since age 13 (the year of my first session gig when I played bass for a country/western guy named Bob Foster's single, both A and B sides. He was just too way the coolest guy ever to allow me that honor).

6 years later, when I was 18, I was big brother to a young, troubled teen. He came to my place one day, after returning from his school's anual outing to the local amusement park with a gift for me.

It was a T-shirt that he made at the park that read, "Dave...Boss of the Bass".

I wore that shirt until it literally disintegrated, and the nickname stuck amongst musicians who know me (not until the endless ribbing and fishing jokes wore off).

I decided, a few years ago, when I finally had Michael Dolan custom build a bass for me that I designed, to have the fret markers spell it out, because that little gift meant so much to me.

After not having heard anything from this fella for 25 years, he called me over the holidays, which conversation lasted 3 hours.

He owns his own business, is married, the proud father of 3 beautiful kids (who I got to talk to during this call), and has been clean for many years, all for which he thanked me repeatedly.

...It don't get any better than that.

What a heartwarming story! This whole thread is turning out a lot more interesting than I ever thought it would be. Kudos for the Big Brother stuff bossobass, it obviously made an impact.
