Outlaw Surprise Field Inspection

Attention All Outlaws!

We suggest that you keep your theaters clean, calibrated and in working order, because you never know when the Outlaws may drop in for a surprise field inspection!

While visiting secret Outlaw hideouts in Southern California this weekend, Outlaw's Peter Tribeman dropped in on Soundhound's theater for a visit with the "hound and Boblinds." We can attest from first hand experience that the sound of a Model 950 through tube amps and LARGE, efficient speakers is spectacular, particularly when fed with first generation pre-mix material from some of Soundhound's projects.

See the picture below from the visit. Pictured, left to right, Soundhound, Peter Tribeman and Boblinds. Soundhound's theater/studio is spectacular, and pay special attention to the birdhouse on the shelf in the top middle of the picture. It's actually the sound box for the projector, and the "door" of the house directly above Peter's head is the lens exit. Despite the intense research by the Outlaws present, the presence of the reel-to-reel recorder does not indicate any intent on the part of the Outlaws to enter that product segment. (Or does it? You never know!)

Who knows where the Outlaws will land next!

No surprise inspections allowed at my door without 6-weeks surprise notice. I have given up house hygiene for AV pursuits, business and most recently, a stab at car racing, (due to a bet). I MEAN IT …[no surprises}.

You must have had a wonderful ‘inspection’. I wish the Outlaws were not so scattered about the country and we could have an Outlaw meet, but with the distances attendance would be spotty at best. Still maybe some day the Outlaws should try. In would be nice to have the famous SH Outlaw margaritas with some of the most interesting (and knowledgeable) guys from one of the most helpful AV forum sites in existence.

In fact, Lena, we went to lunch at Soundhound's favorite marguerita hangout (and coincidentally one of mine too). However, since it WAS lunchtime on a Sunday, we allowed disgression to prevail and it was a Coke and iced tea afternoon.

The right honorable Mr. Tribeman is a total kick in the pants and we had a wonderful time laughing and talking about audio equipment, movie soundtracks, and big boy toys in general. It was a great visit capped by the stunning sound of "Da Hound's" music editing work and his super-system.

Wow, what a hoot! It was great having the Outlaws over for "inspection". These guys are the real deal, and it's rewarding to know that their sensibilities are where it counts - in good sound. It was also interesting to see that these guys are REALLY Outlaws in more ways than one one It's going to get very interesting.....

Restraint was the order of the day - no pitcher of margaritas this time, however it was very tempting.

After the "inspection" Boblinds and myself spent the afternoon "re-tuning" my main speakers. In addition to the high-low frequency balance, there are scads of adjustments that can make for craziness, but with the help of boblinds' fresh ears, we made some amazing progress. To tweak or not to tweak - what a silly quesion!

Peter, thanks for lunch, and the visit!

Now about the amount of jpeg compression in that photo........

"It was also interesting to see that these guys are REALLY Outlaws"
After restraining yourselves from the margaritas!? Me I would have pointed a finger across the table and said, you are the designated driver.

Of course it might have colored the way the demo of SH’s setup went. And no telling what the guests would have decided to tweak…….so maybe twas best.

I too am looking forward to …… It's going to get very interesting.....

gee, I live less than two hours from Peter, Scott & Mike ... how come they've never come down to see Grumpy's Lair?

Actually guys, hold off 'til late summer or so. What with my folks living with me while their condo is being built, the Lair is a ... "tad" ... messy (read: a friggin disaster area).

Honestly, would love to have you down to check the place out. Just had a Channel Master Crossfire 3679 & rotor put up on the roof last weekend. The 950/750/Boston's are still sounding sweet. The 65" Mitsu is looking sweet. The Lair is almost ready for visitors!

Well, I would be happy to give them a screening in our home, however they would need to make their way to Ft. Lauderdale, so Scott if you need a Vacation away from that frozen tundra you live in, your welcome to the couch....
Peace !!!

If they want to make a trip down to Florida they could stop off here in Birmingham, AL on the way

Re: Outlaw Surprise Field Inspection! - 04/02/03 04:16 PM

It goes without saying that the Outlaws are welcome to drop by Memphis for a glance at gonk's system, even if it is rather mundane compared to 'hound's setup. Of course, I doubt business brings the Outlaws through the home of The King all that often...

Re: Outlaw Surprise Field Inspection! - 04/02/03 06:14 PM

The real thrill of having the Outlaws over was receiving an "Official Genuine Outlaw Pen" which lights up with a green glow. Unfortunately, my pen stopped working but Boblind's still does. Hmmm a 50% failure rate.......can I request a replacement?

'hound:

Can you send the pen in for a battery upgrade?

From your fellow canine: Iggy The Dog

Hound:

The light is always greener on the other side of the pen.

Bob

PS -- I wish the rest of you could hear how many times Da Hound has thrown this up to me since we got those pens. ;-)

PPS -- Mine is still lighting up beautifully, by the way. Heh, heh.

Do you know where your pen is tonight?

Is Outlaw going to be giving out the pens at this year's show??? I was at the HTE show last year in NYC but it was just before I became an Outlaw owner. Those pens are really sweet.

Re: Outlaw Surprise Field Inspection! - 04/03/03 03:28 PM

You can purchase these pens at The Sharper Image - presumably they guarantee that their pens will continue to function. No such guarantee accompanined my pen from the Outlaws. I'm depressed

s/h,

Have you tried replacing the battery? It takes an L1154 alkaline camera type cell.

The batteries are fine, but the switch is defective.......I'm sure the pen will soon be running out of ink too.........THIS IS AN OUTRAGE!

I think I see the problem with the switch, soundhound. Silly thing is a pretty silver color, not green like any self-respecting switch should be...

Maybe all it needs is a firmware update.

Re: Outlaw Surprise Field Inspection! - 04/04/03 12:52 PM

Please Outlaws, do you have a functioning replacement pen that you could send to Soundhound? This is getting serious.

His wife tells me that he's now spending endless hours in the Soundhound theater watching constant reruns of "Monster from the Green Hell," "The Green Mile," "The Green Slime" and "Children of the Damned." I understand that when the kids eyes glow green, he can be heard to mutter, "My pen. My pen. My precious."

I'd give him mine -- which is functioning very nicely, thank you -- but, honestly, I'm now afraid to go over there.

I think Outlaw is really behind the curve. I can acquire two different versions of Clocks, themes by MINI BMW. And so far I’ don’t even own an Outlaw PEN!.

Where IS the order section for Outlaw accessorizing? And could you please make some iron-on logos, so I can stick one on a nice tailored lycra T. not one of those tent jobs in XXX you can sleep in!
I going to race tonight…..I don’t usually wear ‘themed’ shirts, but that would be a very appropriate spot for a shirt which says “OUTLAW”.

Its an outrage SH has A PEN AT ALL…(funtioning or not).
You…… you,,,, privileged elitist's both of you!!!

Re: Outlaw Surprise Field Inspection! - 04/04/03 05:27 PM

What sets mankind (and womenkind) apart from the beasts is our ability to accessorize.

It is imperative that SH get his pen up and running. Hopefully, he will not hear any hiss coming from it. Or any strange voices.

Boblinds,

I'ts OK if it talks to you with 7.1 voices in Latin.

Paul

p.s. I didn't enjoy therapy much untill they really cranked up the voltage.
