Disc Problems - Oppo BDP-83 - 02/01/12 09:31 PM

The Oppo is my third and by far the best DVD player i've owned. After years of flawless performance recently, while watching a movie the picture freezes. Most of the time it will continue playing after a few seconds, other times it skips scenes and other times it just freezes. All my movies come from BB and Netflix and at times I will remove the disc and clean it. Sometimes that helps, but not always. I have had similar problems with my prior units (Adcom and Marantz) after several years and feel that maybe dirt is getting on the "eye". I have a Marantz cleaning disc which is a DVD with a few small bristles on them. I have not found this to be particularly effective. Any thoughts on what this might be or suggestions as to how I might fix this?

Could need to have the firmware upgraded or the laser cleaned or the disc cleaned.

Thanks, neighbor. Unit is connected to the internet wirelessly so it upgrades the firmware when full releases are available. I will check the movies I have at home and see if they appear to need cleaning and will do so before watching. If I need to clean the laser, is that something I can do myself? Compressed air? Or do I need professional cleaning?

There is a disc you can buy to clean the laser. I have used it on my computer before but you might want to check with oppo.

I've run into an issue with my bdp-83 as well. This may or may not be related to your problem but it may help. Mine is having a problem loading the top menu on discs primarily from Universal Studios, Killer Elite and Change Up. It would download trailers from the internet and play trailers directly from the disc but not load the menu. I checked and it had the latest update available.

I e-mailed oppo's customer support about the problem early on superbowl Sunday. The response was time stamped during the superbowl. Now that's dedicated customer service. They have an update that they are beta testing that should resolve the issue. Sorry I don't have the link available to post at present, at work. I'm sure if you contact oppo's customer support they will give it to you.

Hope this helps.
