ICBM-2 Update from the Outlaws - 05/01/13 12:04 PM

It has been a while since we have mentioned the ICBM-2 in our newsletters, so we would like to bring you up to date on where that product stands with this post.

As those who have been following this project know, the ICBM-2 is a fully analog bass management controller with a wide range of options and settings to meet the needs of the most sophisticated home theater or professional system.

Building on the success of the original ICBM, the new model was intended to deliver proper bass control for an analog signal path. The design is done, though some circuit tweaking remains to get things just the way they should be.

However, in the time since the ICBM-2 was conceived it has become apparent that with very few exceptions virtually all home theater systems use HDMI for audio transport from a playback source to the surround processor. That, in turn, greatly diminishes the demand for this type of product and the high per-unit price of a low-volume production run does not allow us to offer it at the value price you expect from the Outlaws.

Therefore, it is only right that we let you know that we have put the ICBM-2 on the back burner at this time. The project is not cancelled, as we will continue to evaluate market demand in relation to the price we would have to charge. Of course, we’ll let you know if things change, but at the same time we don’t want people waiting for something that is not in the plans for the foreseeable future.

We appreciate your patience with this and look forward to bringing you the many other products we have in development across our product lines for this year.

It always was going to be a very narrow market for the ICBM or ICBM2 since most processors have incorporated bass management internally to some extent. Even many subs now have some sort of equalizer built in to provide some bass management. It sounds like a good decision to shelve this project and focus on some others but we would really like some info on what those new projects are. Does the 998 live on in an updated form.

Hmmm...Outlaw doesn't seem to be carrying any Marantz products right now either, including B-stock. Wonder if we'll see something new by Black Friday???

Hope it's an Outlaw product and not an announcement of Outlaw reselling another Marantz product.
