I am wondering about DACs and video processor. I expect the best from OPPO and rumor has it $499.

Do we know the model number? If OPPO runs true to form there will be two models.

If I had to take a WAG this should be the Model 113 with the 115 right behind it at three times the price for those who want their top level offering.

UDP-203 and it lists for $499.00.

Re: Oppo 4K Blu-ray - 09/20/16 01:21 PM

If that is the case we should be able to expect the 205 at some point soon.

With the 203 at $499. the 205 will be $1,500. give or take a few to stay inline with recent generations of their product.

I wonder what will become of Darbee? I was not a fan of the Darbee effect but others liked what it did. To my eyes even at the lowest settings Darbee made the display look like an image that had been overprocessed in photoshop. I tried a 103D when OPPO offered trade up deals and sent it back.

Re: Oppo 4K Blu-ray - 09/20/16 06:20 PM

The OPPO rep at CEDIA seemed to indicate that the Darbee product would be integral to the 205 along with DAC and video processor upgrades to lure the "philes". The upgraded version will likely be 2-3 times the standard version. The current price point is $499 but could change in the next few months. They expect it to be available before spring. I have my card ready for one right now. When they first came out with the 105 it was priced right at twice the cost of the 103. Since Darbee is now part of the upgraded decks I would expect the new unit to be priced at a similar level with what now exists. That assumes they haven't included some other goodies.

Several other companies are bringing out their players and are hundreds cheaper but they don't have OPPOs commitment to customer service. Last year I had to send my 103 in because the disc tray would not open. They paid to have it shipped both ways and fixed it for free. They also checked it throughout for any other issues and made sure the latest version of firmware was installed. I got it back and it looked like they sent my a brand new unit completely repackaged and all in about a week.

Cannot argue with the customer service from OPPO. I have not had the issue with mine but have heard several owners discuss trays not opening. Did they give you any idea what might have caused it to not open? I have not heard anyone who had the issue complain of any lack of service. We have been happy with the OPPO and will most likely buy another somewhere down the road.

As long as my Samsung plasma hangs tough 4K is not a priority though any new gear will have the capability.

Re: Oppo 4K Blu-ray - 09/20/16 11:10 PM

The BDP83 had the issue for about a year. Sporadically it would take several iterations before it would open. OPPO had a workaround where if you left a disc in the tray the issue did not occur. Finally mine just would not open at all. I initially thought it was due to a drop from about ten feet while we were moving to NC (it was in its original packaging thankfully). But it worked fine for several years after the fall so I don't think that was the cause. I had seen that the issue existed but the work around was a puzzle. OPPO never said but I am sure someone knows.

Interesting article. Curious this article mentions DVD Audio support when the write up done at the AVS forums knocked it for not supporting the format. OPPO does well but for me I am still skeptical of any first generation of a new technology. I was a preorder buyer of the 103 and saw the unit go through weekly firmware updates for quite some time. For OPPO to be doing cutting edge tech I will wait for a while to let them get past the teething pains.

To early to adopt for me

Re: Oppo 4K Blu-ray - 09/25/16 09:54 AM

Until we actually see the 203 I would expect it will support DVD-A simply because every disc player they have made since the BDP83 has supported the format.

I would think this should be correct. It would seem silly to eliminate software based functions they have included for the last three generations of product.

Oppo announced that they are no longer going to make any new products.

Re: Oppo 4K Blu-ray - 04/04/18 03:15 PM

Im stunned by this. My hand is being forced to grab a UDP203 before they are gone. Other than 4K, what does it do that my 103 cannot ?

Re: Oppo 4K Blu-ray - 04/04/18 05:23 PM

HDR, Dolby Vision and Object based codecs are supported by the 203 besides 4K. The OPPO website page for the 103 says it can output 4k X 2k. Myself I don't plan to upgrade to 4K until my current system implodes. At that point I will likely get whatever BDP is available in my price range. IMHO, I think OPPO sees the writing on the wall that the video processing for home theater is beyond the point where it is practical to keep building machines better than what they currently have.

I'm glad you guys caught this or I may have missed out. I was hoping to wait until my remodel was a little more complete but I had to pull the trigger on the 203.

The 205 is already showing out of stock. You're guess if they are going to build more, though a phone call may clear that up.

It looks like Oppo is considering another production run on the 205s!!!!

Re: Oppo 4K Blu-ray - 04/10/18 09:53 AM

I saw this article about the OPPO BDP-83 reliability and wondered if the other BDPs they have built are as good. FWIW mine took an 8 foot drop in its original packaging during a move and still works like a champ. Had the disc tray issue and OPPO fixed it for free and reconditioned it while they had it.

Xenon, would you please explain the disc tray issue. Must have missed that one !

Re: Oppo 4K Blu-ray - 04/10/18 08:05 PM

The BDP-83 had an issue where the disc tray would become balky over time and at some point would just refuse to open. A workaround for it was to just leave a disc in the tray. Once OPPO had a permanent fix they had me ship the unit to them, they did the repair which was a new design disc tray and sent it back to me after they cleaned it internally, made sure the latest firmware was installed, and repackaged it to look like new. I even got a new set of white gloves and a carry bag. As far as I know only the BDP-83 was affected.
