LFM-1EX Promotions - 03/08/13 01:05 PM

Hi everyone,

Well, it's been bad timing on my AR subwoofer. Bad phase switch or something and I have to continuously wiggle it to have the speaker kick in.
I'm interested in the LFM 1ex but I'm waiting hopefully for a sale.
From past history, can anyone tell me if there are certain times that this sub seems to be on sale? I am on the mailing list but would like to get some idea if anyone might think there will be a promotion anytime soon?

Thanks everyone.

Why not just replace the switch for the time being? The Outlaws have sub sales a couple of times per year and we may be coming up on another one before summer.

Thanks for the info.
I would replace the switch but don't want to attempt myself.

It would probably be worth it (if that is in fact the problem) It's intermittent so I can deal with it for now and save the money for a new sub. I'll wait for the promotion.

It could just be a loose wire. If you remove the amp plate from the back of the sub you may be able to determine the issue. Sometimes the switches are held on with a bezzle ring and when it gets loose the switch contacts something it shouldn't. It is a pretty easy exploratory surgery if you want to tackle it.

I will explore further. I do know that when I flip the switch up and down, I will hear a slight pop but it takes a few times to get the subwoofer to engage. If the switch is bad and is only 2 wires connected to the circuit board, I would definitely consider replacing. The sub still sounds fine and if I do get the LFM, there is no reason I still can't use both if I fix this one.

Thanks,

Dave

Many switches are made to be self cleaning and when they don't get cycled often they develop some resistance. With the sub OFF cycle the switch 50 times or so and see if that helps.

Be careful with that. If it's the sub that's giving you the little popping noises then it's possible you have an intermittent problem with the switch that a few cycles will clear out.

However, if it's the switch itself that is giving you little electrical noise pops then the switch may be arcing out in which case more cycles will just kill it quicker. Put your nose close to the switch and see if you smell any electrical burning type smells. If you do then it's time to replace the switch.

Well so far, the sub has worked. I haven't touched the switch. This is after I took the panel off. The switch is soldered directly to the board so nothing is loose.
However I did seem to notice like something looked to be oozing brown at one time from a capacitor or something on the board. Not sure how long it's been like that and I'm not sure that the switch has anything to do with it since they're in different areas.
If it stops working, I will try cycling the switch to see if it makes a difference. For the time being I'll be patient, hope the sub keeps working and hope for a sale on the outlaw.

Thanks guys.

Find a electronics repair person and have the cap replaced and the board cleaned up. I had new output cables put on my Technics TT for $25 last fall by a guy I found through word of mouth in NC. You can look someone up online in the phonebook and get it fixed right.

In case the OP is set up to receive email notifications of thread updates ... the LFM-1EX is on sale plus free S&H this week.

Save $110 on a badass sub. The LFM-1EX is a bear for bass.

One left the warehouse last night and is on it's way to my home as we speak. I'll drive it with my Model 975 and it'll be paired with my Atlantic Technology FS7.1 sound bar. I can't wait for it to show up!!!

Yee Haa!! Be prepared for the actual size(freakin HUGE) and remember the top is covered by a protective sticker which will rile the wife up if she sees it first. Once you peal it off the nice shiny black, finished top will magically appear. Have fun setting it up. I set mine on an Auralex Gramma isolation stand just to get it off the floor.

Holy Crap! Yeah, I read the specs, but ... wow! Just WOW! This thing is a MONSTER!! Heck, it might even qualify as a room of it's own! shocked

I managed to get it up into the living room. Now I've got to get back to work (a work @ home day). I can't wait until I can hook it up this evening.:D

I still think subs should be thought of like organ pipes ...

That is the 64' pipe organ at Sydney Town Hall...

They could easily double as end tables for a couch. I wish someone would include built in handles on speakers and subs to make them easy to move around. That is one good thing about the maggies, they are easy to reposition.

If it weren't for the fact that it's the wrong shape (not 1x4x9 nor a ratio there of), i'd call it The Monolith! laugh

Re: LFM-1EX Promotions - 04/09/13 04:34 PM

@XenonMan - how stable *IS* the LMF-1EX? Can it be used as an end table (i.e.; put a lamp on it)?
Posted by: XenonMan

Re: LFM-1EX Promotions - 04/09/13 07:09 PM

It is very stable, but bear in mind that anything you put on it is subject to some movement due to vibration unless you put some sort of damping under it. My wife kept a glass vase with seashells in it on mine for a while but it did a little dance and pock marked the top a little bit. I put some felt sticky backed pads on the bottom and that fixed the issue. I currently keep a statue of a blue marlin on a piece of Teak rootknot and have had no issues. As far as an end table it would be just fine but some people need to set their drinks down on it and I have always been afraid that liquids could get inside if not collected quickly. The top is very well sealed but why take the chance. I have seen little trays made of Bamboo which have sides on them which would be perfect to set on the top to allow drinks to be set down safely.

Re: LFM-1EX Promotions - 04/09/13 07:29 PM

Thanks! I'll just put a small lamp (which has a wooden base with a full felt pad under it) and my weather station console (has rubber feet).

Re: LFM-1EX Promotions - 04/10/13 01:30 PM

Thanks Pat,

I wasn't aware of that even though I'm on the mailing list.
I was hoping to get it for under $600 but I guess those days are long gone. Probably order today.

Thanks again,

Dave

@DaveWoj - well it's not *under* $600, but it's darned close w/o S&H. smile

Re: LFM-1EX Promotions - 04/12/13 12:21 PM

I've got one on order. Should be here next week.
Been having the no audio issue with my 970 for awhile. I don't have a serial port on my new computer or a cable so I would have to take it to my parents to do the update.
I do however, have a brand new one in a box that I bought after the update in 2007. I got it in a package deal with a 7 channel amp for $299. Figured it could be a backup. This might be the perfect time to break it out then I can update the older one some other time.

Re: LFM-1EX Promotions - 04/19/13 12:38 PM

OK. Just got mine yesterday. 3 inch hole through both outer and inner carton but no damage to the cabinet luckily.
You can look at the specs showing the size of this sub but until I unpacked it, I couldn't believe the size. wow.
I need to play with it this weekend but the one thing I did notice was that the AC plug is a little loose in the back of the sub and it is pushed in all the way Anyone else notice this?

I could wrap a little electrical tape around it and maybe that would help.

Re: LFM-1EX Promotions - 04/20/13 09:26 AM

@DaveWoj,

Nope, my plug seems fine. I'd guess the electric take is all you need (to increase diameter inn the plug, but you should drop a note to Outlaw Nancy too, just to be sure.

I had a friend over last night to watch Men in Black 3 ... It was a blast, really a fun movie ... and it was my first real workout for the LMF-1EX and it was AWESOME! laugh
