Now I am picking a new sub ... - 06/30/10 01:56 PM

Hello,

I have decided to get the Integra 40.1 that Gonk recommended as a processor but I now need a new subwoofer. I mostly watch movies. I have a $2000 budget and my wife will only allow one subwoofer. My three candidates are

Elemntal Designs A7-700 $1800
Definitive Trinity sub $1800
SVS PB13 Ultra @ $1800

Unfortunately I will have to buy any one of these without hearing them. Elemetal and SVS are internet only and NOBODY carries the Trinity in a store...

Does anyone have any advice? Can anyone provide contrasts? Thank you for your input.

You mean, an Outlaw sub is out of the question?

Well....I am not sure the Outlaw subs are really comparable to the three I am considering...No offence intended...

Thanks,

Outlaw doesn't really offer any subs in that class. Unfortunately, I don't have any experience with subs in this class, either, so I can't offer much useful insight.

Ive been drooling over the Rythmik line of subs after i heard one last winter. very fast accurate sub, it was paired with a set of maggies and it sounded great. I was very impressed and instantly made me realize what my paradigm is lacking.

ETA: it was the 15" FWIW.

Well, if you're up for some other options, take a look at REL, ditributed by Sumiko. Someday when I hit the lottery or I have completed all of my other HT upgrades I plan on getting one of there ST line of subs. At your price range you could look at either the B or R series. I have auditioned them both as well as heard/seen several movies at my friends house who has one of the R-505's and it is superb!

....also look at audiogon for the Martin Logan line of subs, they all are top performers but the Descent is pretty badass!

Internet direct dealers , like HSU , have " frapper maps " .( HSU's can be found in the Forum Section )
I do not know that SVS or Elemental has a " frapper map " but if they do ?
Being able to listen to one before buying is always better.

The Descent is badass. I've had this sub (matched with my Martin Logan Aeon i's) and they are a beautiful match. But just speaking on the Martin Logan Sub; its pricy but if you're looking for a top of the line, fast, knock a hole in your chest subwoofer, you gotta hear it to believe it. I'm sure somewhere on this earth there's a better one but let me know when you find it.

Check out JL Audio and their Fathom F113. Similar price to the ML and great reviews. They also make the F212 which is insane.

Your reading my mind. I know the Gotham is out of my price range, but look at the specs on it! JL Audio makes world class subz.

I have an F112 Fathom and it deserves a lot of credit. You can likely buy one of these cubes of destruction and wow your friends (and frighten your pets) for around 2000 on Audiogon, maybe less if slightly used. I would not recommend buying one used unless you can be 100% sure that the person shipping it is using the original container AND that container survived the first shipment intact. Mine looked decent but it clearly had to be built like a small safe to make it safely.
