got spikes?

got spikes? - 01/09/03 12:10 PM

I have a pair of b&w DM604s that will be placed on a carpeted floor. The guy who sold them to me didn't have the floor spikes.

1. Do the speakers really *need* to be anchored to the carpet with spikes?

2. Will there be any vibration if the spikes are missing?

3. Does anyone on this board have a set of 8 spikes they wish to sell?

Spikes will solidify the sound, make the bass more distinct.

You might be able to get some spikes from a local dealer. It's important to have a solid seat for Base. You can also try contacting the US distributor .

Spikes also keep the speakers from walking away, if you have large woofers or subwoofers in them.

Thanks, you guys rock!

I've already contacted b&w; they want $73 for the spikes. I don't have $73 to spend on spikes so I'm going to try the hardware store. There's also this dude selling floor spikes on ebay and I'm working with him to ascertain that the thread size matches.

Thanks again!

Update: I wrote to B&W UK and raised a stink about the cost The same B&W America guy called me back and apologized for the "mistake" and said he'll give me the spikes for $30 including shipping. I accepted his offer a few minutes ago

Nice, sounds like you caught the US rep gouging a little. Nice turn around on B&W UK's part though.

Speaking of gouging,a couple of years ago I ordered a set of speaker spikes on the phone from the local B&W dealer- for $40, the set. When I got the call they were in, I headed right over.
"That'll be $55.00" the salesman said.
"$55.00?" I said? "You quoted me $40"
"Yup. The washers are an additional $15.00".
I told him to keep the washers, I just wanted the spikes.
"No, sorry, can't sell the spikes without the washers" he said.
They probably still have that set of washers and spikes.

Hey maybe TheDeep is going to be charged $43 for the washers so the guy can get his original quoted $73 for the spikes. :P

I would have walked out of that store also except whenever I told the story I would make sure I mentioned the name of the store that tried to rip me off. I really hate some of the sound system shops, they can be quite sleezy sometimes.

I think I have some old fender washers rattling around in my garage that I'd part with for the right $$$

Fender washers??? They'd have to get triple the money for those!

Yeah, I had to go right home and take a shower that day.

The good folks @ Boston Acoustics sent me a full set of 8 for my pair of VR-970's for free. They were missing when I purchased the speakers, Just sent an e-mail to the parts dept. After all they are just pointed screws and length adjusting nuts. Perhaps a couple of dollars worth of materials - at most ?
Thanks to BA !
