Hi pitch whine/shutdown

Hi pitch whine/shutdown - 06/17/07 02:03 AM

I just hooked up my 990 and 7700 today. The whole input configuration is a little tricky, as is trying to figure out how the remote works...

Anyway, I do not have any hum with the 7700 (using balanced cables), however when the amp shuts down, about 5 seconds later I get a whining noise in the right rear surround that lasts about 2-3 seconds. Its not loud, but it sure seems odd.

That may be a capacitor discharging - I've got a similar whine from my right front with my 7500. Sort of a soft whistle.

That's exactly what it is. I called support with the same question with my 755 and got this answer.

PS - I get the same whine with my 7700.

So this is normal, nothing to worry about?

That is what I was told by Outlaw Support when I called for my 755(three years ago) and I trust that the symptom on my 7700 has the same root cause.

If you want a more definitive, 'official' answer, give the outlaws a call (or drop them an email). It'll cost you nothing and you'll have a documented answer straight from the horses mouth.

From Scortt @ Outlaw;

It is a capacitor discharge. It is not harmful and is normal.

To me it just sounds kinda funny. I can always tell friends its the supercharged amp winding down smile

I, too experienced a whine at powe-down. Was soon after receiving either the 755 or 7700. It went away after (can't remember) a while.

Maybe the tech-type guys can answer whether this means just "burning-in" with time.
