This may be a dumb newby question but I can't find the clear answer in this forum. I'm setting up my 970/7125 for 5.1 speakers. My rear channel speakers are located about 6ft. behind my seating position and on the side walls of my HT. My question is which speaker outputs do I use? Left and Right Surround or Left and Right Surround Back? Thanks for the help.

Use the surround outputs. The surround back outputs are only used for the last two speakers in 7.1 setups.

In the grey "NOTE:" box at the bottom of page 28 in the manual, the last line says "If you have no side surround speakers, the back surround channels are automatically deactivated." So you should not even be able to get sound out of your speakers if you chose SURROUND BACK, but haven't chosen SURROUND. I just got my 970 today for a second setup and remembered seeing that when I was perusing the manual. Good luck and enjoy your Outlaw gear.
