SMS-1 is awesome, but needs higher RTA resolution

SMS-1 is awesome, but needs higher RTA resolution - 02/11/07 01:01 PM

...this is gonna be one of those "must have" things in the system from now on. I didn't use the automatic EQ (I prefer to set all my audio gear manually), but playing with the phase shifter and parametric EQ really made my subwoofer blend seamlessly with my system. Its amazing what this thing can do.

One thing I'm not clear of, what is the resolution of the onscreen spectrum analyzer? From the looks of it, it can't be more then 1/3 octave or so. I was really hoping it could zero down as far as 1/12 octave. Perhaps a firmware change later on will allow us to "zoom" in to see where various severe peaks and vallies are?

I took a small rooms acoustics/system calibration class and it says you really need a 1/12 octave RTA as well as a parametric EQ capable of 1/12. The SMS-1 is capable of that but its only 1/2 the equation. Short of spending $2000 for a Sencore product, there's gotta be something else.

Hi Ericdwong, I think you can change the Q on the frequencies that the SMS-1 covers. Is that what you are asking? Try looking at the outlaw guide to the sms-1 that helped me.

No, not quite. I know the Q/bandwidth is adjustable for the parametric EQ.

But what I'm looking for is the analyzer section (when you turn on the TV and listen to the rising test tone) to be able to be zoomed. Right now, it looks like the resolution is only 1/3 octave. That way you can really zero in on the offensive peaks in the bass.

It's something that you could certainly ask about - Outlaw may be able to tell you what the resolution is, but it'd be up to Velodyne to say whether the resolution can be increased and a "zoom" mode added without hardware changes.

I am purchasing the LFM-1 Plus and the LFM-2 I was thinking of investing a little more money and buying the SMS-1 to have the perfect complement for the two subwoofers.
How difficult is it to use?
I forced myself to use an SPL meter for fear of really screwing things up but all went well. Gonk and another gunslinger Palmer gave me some guidence and suggestions along with reading the manual a couple of times....What a difference!
I am still not content with the bass response in my Definitive 1500 but it is better then it was before I the SPL. The bass in my Definitive 2004's are fine. However I know that I can have a better bass response and sound that is why I am moving to the Outlaw LFM Subs.

If you are curious about the SMS-1's complexity, skip the Velodyne manual and grab Outlaw's SMS-1 Guide . The basic setup is straightforward, but it takes a little time to do a manual EQ (which is what will really let the SMS-1 prove itself) and you'll need to familiarize yourself with the SMS-1's options first.

Yep - noticed the manual link on the Adcom page, and it appears that the HDMI ports are purely for video.

Thanks Gonk I will grab the Outlaw's guide to the sms-1 and see what I am getting into or if I really want to take a giant leap for bass.
