Newbie Question - 11/23/06 02:34 PM

I just purchased the LFM-1 plus and Sms-1 package from Outlaw and am trying to get things setup. I am by no means an expert in audio equipment and have a couple questions regarding the setup.

One question I have is on the crossover. I am running an Outlaw 1050 receiver with 750 amp. The setup guide asks to mute the sub and adjust the volume of the main speakers to around 80db. I have the crossover on the receiver set but am getting lower frequency sound from the mains with the subwoofer muted. Is this normal or am I missing a setting somewhere? The xover appears to be working because the sound changes with different freq settings.

The other question I have is on calibrating the system to the main speakers in stereo mode. I mostly use the system to watch 5 channel movies and concert dvd's. Why not calibrate with the center and surrounds as well?

Are the mains set to small in the 1050? If they aren't, you'll get low frequency sound all the way down. If they are set to small with an 80Hz crossover in the 1050, you will be able to see the roll-off of the crossover, which is not an absolute cutoff - it'll actually appear as a sloping line starting a little above 80Hz.

As for calibrating in stereo mode, you are actually only calibrating the sub with the SMS-1. It can't control any other devices. As such,

Thanks for the reply. I can see the roll-off start at 80hz and hit zero just below 60. I have a blip back up at 50hz. Does the crossover give up when the frequencies hit zero? All of the speakers are set to small.

Is there something else in the room making noise? (Air conditioner, perhaps?) That could explain the 50Hz blip.

Could be the conditioning. I'll do more experimenting.
