SMS-1 Screenshots - 10/27/06 05:22 PM

My SMS-1 showed up from Outlaw a couple days ago.

I've posted a Flickr photoset screenshots. This is for my B&W 603 S2s + a single Velodyne FSX-12 sub.

SMS-1 Flickr Photoset (look at the photo descriptions, they explain how I got each curve)

I've always had trouble calibrating my sub w/ Avia test tones, and now I guess it's obvious why, my room has a pretty big bump around 80hz. I had to get pretty drastic with the crossover settings to tame it, my pre/pro now crosses my mains at 100hz, and the SMS-1 lowpass is at 120hz. Not sure how to feel about that... and I don't know enough about room treatments to know if there is another way to smooth that area out.

My initial listening impressions are that "true" bass = almost no bass. I guess it will take some getting used to!

Nice flat curve, and it looks like the SMS-1 was as useful as a diagnostic tool as it was as an EQ in your case. Like you, I have my sub next to my right speaker and I ended up with 0deg phase working nicely. And your comment about "true bass" being the absence of obvious bass boom is a good one...

As far as a diagnostic tool, yes, I think if I'd ordered something like the R-DES instead, I would be sending it back since it really wouldn't be doing much for me that I couldn't accomplish with my subs built in crossover.

I think I'll keep the SMS-1 though. I wish they'd add a mode to take the sweep up to 500hz or more so that I could get a better idea what my mains are doing and evaluate room treatments with it.
