I just got my sms 1 and was wondering do I have to hook up the eq out to my receiver

Yes, you do need to connect the EQ output - it will allow your system to play the test tones. Check out the "Connecting the SMS-1" section of
Outlaw\'s SMS-1 Guide
for a good summary of what needs to get hooked up where.
