SMS-1 and connections

SMS-1 and connections - 04/15/06 02:44 PM

I just got my SMS-1 today and I am psyched! I am, however, a tad confused by the manual. If I connect my processor LFE output to the SMS-1 input via balanced XLR cable and then the SMS-1 to the subwoofer via unbalanced cable with a Y-splitter into both the L and R inputs on the sub, will I avoid the mandatory internal cross-over mentioned in paragraph 3 on page 9 of the manual?

There is no mandatory internal crossover for the subwoofer - paragraph refers to the SMS-1's high-pass crossover for the left and right channels. The only crossovers that the subwoofer outputs of the SMS-1 come in contact with are the variable low-pass crossover (which can be disabled) and the subsonic filter (a high-pass for the sub that defaults to 15Hz and filters out data below the specified point).

O ..... K, so did I avoid the high pass filter?

The high-pass filter is only applied to the "OUTPUT" ports (number 16 on page 6 of the manual) - you should be avoiding it if you are setting the SMS-1 up with a surround receiver or processor.

Thanks, Gonk! I set this jewel up tonight and all I can say is wow! I got a curve that is plus/minus 3.5 dB at 76dB from 30 H to 100H with a cross over at 80H. SMS volume is 15 with UFW-10 volume at 1/4 gain. Still have some wish list tweaks but for a 1.5 hour effort this is amazing. laugh
