Need a tip for mounting a center channel

Need a tip for mounting a center channel - 12/20/05 03:41 PM

I just (re)acquired a Boston VR12 center. This beast is huge! I used to sit it on top of my RPTV but have since upgraded to a micro RPTV. I'm trying to figure a way to place it above the display. I don't think a shelf will work since I have metal studs and this sucker is almost a foot deep. I thought about some kind of tv mounted shelf, but have only found ones for CRT tv's.

Any ideas?

Your question brought this AV123 thread to mind - it's an example of a wall-mounted shelf that anchors to a stud. Metal studs would probably require different screws, but might still work.

Other ideas may crop up here - I know that forum member hullguy has talked about mounting plasma TV's before on commercial projects, which would certainly entail connecting to metal studs.

It's no problem mounting a shelf to steel studs, as long as you mount to at least 2! For the Plasma scrreens we removed the sheetrock and monted a piece of plywood to the surface of the metal studs. This gives you the flexibility of covering a greater area for weight dispersion and allows you to center the shelf and speaker easier.

Thanks for the info. I did the drywall/stud fix once when I installed a microwave hood, but I doubt the wife would let me do that for a speaker.

The speaker mount you linked to Hullguy only supports up to 15 pounds. The VR12 is 31+. I did find something at Circuit City that appears to be working. OmniMount Center Channel .

Now that its hooked up, the wife thinks it's a monstrosity :-D. It sounds amazing though.

I've been trying to find something unobtrusive to set my 31+ lb Klipsch THX-LCR center channel on underneath my projector screen for a long time. Right now it is sitting atop a wooden box and looks like crud.

If you're semi handy, you could build a couple of speaker stands to hold it.

Thanks for the link kugumby! It looks simple enough and I am on vacation next week. I may just have to give it a try.

Hey Doug, Did you try to build those stands?

Hopefully they turned out well and fit your needs.

I had 10 days off over the holidays and that was on my list with about 10 other things to do. Needless to say, I did absolutely nothing over my vacation. I really enjoyed just relaxing for a while. It was the first time I have been both off work and out of classes in about 5 years. I'll have to see what I can do over the next couple weeks as I would still like to pursue this. I will try to post a pic of the ugly situation with my center channel now as well.

I can understand that! Loafing is a nice pasttime when you can actually do it....especially when one has a 92" screen as you do smile
