trick question on USB audio... - 12/20/07 03:17 PM

Hello all...
I recently purchased a set of Harmon-Kardon SoundSticks on EBay...I still don't know if I misread or was mislead...but I wasn't expecting a USB interface...the Soundsticks II are analog...the original are digital...
I obviously learned this once the speakers arrived...
but it's all good...hooked-up to my PC...they sound just great... they look good in my bedroom...multi-zone on a budget...
But here's my pickle....
because they behave like a sound device on my PC...
my PC shuts off my SPDF output when I use the Soundsticks...

so I've been trying to figure out a way to use two sound devices simultaneously...
even better...(dream dream dream wink ....)
somekind of USB to coaxial(SPDF) adapter...
or a USB to RCA DAC...am I dreamin'?
Harmon-Kardon support is...well...not supportive...
anyone here have some input on this one ?

Thank you Videodrome...
the piece looks very promising...
I wrote to them to see if my application might work...
I think I'd be running the signal in the opposite direction...so I don't know if the box does that...
my fingers are crossed...
sometimes dreams do come true...

My memory is sketchy here, but I think SPDIF (in) to USB (out) is not that hard to do or expensive. But USB (in) to SPDIF (out)is a bit more complex and the units can be pricey. Or maybe it's the other way around??? confused

Anyway, I have a 50/50 chance of being right. smile

That would be nice...SPDIF (in) to USB (out)...it would fix my problem...I'd hook'em up straight to my Outlaw...
that box you linked me to...is USB (in) to SPDIF (out) for roughly 50$...I'm still waiting to hear if it can go the other way...

the "USB in + any flavor of audio out"seem to be the easy readily available ones frown
here's another more pc based adapter ...
awaiting news on this one too...maybe...just maybe it'll work for me...

Thought you should see this list:

Just a few options... wink

Of course, all of them are going in the wrong direction for what you're looking for. The only way I can think of that would work for you would be to take the output of your system and use it as an input on another computer. Then the second computer would have the proper drivers on it to drive the Soundsticks through USB while the first computer outputs the SPDIF. I guess that's a little too much to drive some USB speakers. For the price, I would pick up a pair of the AudioEngine A2 speakers. I heard them the other day and they sound way too good for their size.
