1070 firmware upgrade

1070 firmware upgrade - 10/09/10 11:20 AM

I need to upgrade the firmware on my 1070 to eliminate audio drop as programming switches between digital and analog. But, I have no old computer with a serial port. Has anyone successfully upgraded the firmware through a USB to Serial adapter ? If not, where the heck did you find a machine with a serial port ?

USB to serial adapters can be finicky - might contact Outlaw support to see if there are any specific models they could recommend.

Will do. You would think they would have already done this research because serial ports are not routinely found anymore. Their firmware delivery method is obsolete far before their product is. This dissapoints me even though I'm a long time Outlaw fan and customer. It's weak customer service, but they don't seem to care.

Like you, I suspect they've had this question before - that's why I think they will have some suggestions. When the Model 1070's hardware was being designed back in 2004 or so, RS232 was still around and USB connections on receivers were not around yet.

I have a serial port on the back of my 2007 Dell laptop. I am sure if you ask around someone you know has a laptop or PC you can borrow for the upgrade.

Really ... on a 2007 laptop ... hmmm. I agree with your suggestion and an all points bulletin has gone out to all my acquaintances.

What's really sad is that where I work, there is a storage closet with 10 or 15 old surplus obsolete unused laptops, some with serial ports. I asked the lady office manager if I could borrow 1 for an evening. "No, not unless its for company business" she replied, like any good clueless manager. I'm not in the habit of lying, so I informed her it was not for company buisiness. "Then no", she snapped like the smug fool that she is. Some Friday, I'll slip home with 1 of them and do the firmware deed in stealth in spite of her idiotic stance.

The adapters look pretty inexpensive(~$15), I would think that if you can't locate a temporary donor laptop it would be worth it over overriding your smug bosses direction. It there a reason why you think they won't work for the firmware upgrade?
