What are the power specifications when using 4 Ohm speakers?

Outlaw has not released that information yet, I'm afraid. I actually went back to the Model 1050 PDF data sheet ( available here ) to see if it said anything that might give us a clue, but it did not list 4ohm or 6ohm power levels. We should be seeing more information in the next couple weeks, though, and if this is not included in that information I'd suggest asking Outlaw's tech support team directly (they have a web support page , or you can give them a call).

I'm planning to upgrade to the 1070 and have older ADS speakers (that still sound great). I have three questions:

1. My front speakers are rated at 6 Ohms nominal 4 Ohms minimum. My center, surrounds and rear center are rated at 4 Ohms nominal. Should I set the impedance switch to 4 Ohms?

2. Is there degradation in the sound when the switch is set to 4 Ohms as is suggested in the "Impedance Selector Switches" paragraph located at the bottom of this page (and is there any truth to what this guy is describing? Especially in relation to the 1070?):

http://www.audioholics.com/techtips/buyingguides/avhardware/receivers.php#bass_management

3. If there is some degradation in the sound, and I leave the switch on 8 Ohms will that damage or burn out the receiver under moderate volumes?

Thanks,

- Brian

IIRC, the 1050 was 85 watts @ 4 ohms. I think it'd be best to contact Outlaw directly to answer these questions as they would have the most knowledgable answers.

Re: 4 Ohm Performance - 08/24/05 08:24 AM

The manual that is up does not specify 4 ohm performance, only 8 ohm and 6 ohm There appears to be a switch on the back to set the amp for 4 ohm performance. Can one of the Outlaws enlighten us as to the 4ohm spec?

This would be better posted than having a bunch of people contacting the Outlaws by phone.

Re: 4 Ohm Performance - 08/24/05 10:15 AM

The impedance switch on the Model 1070 optimizes the power supply for the lower impedance load. Thus, the output level at 4 ohms is identical to that of 8 ohms. To correct an earlier comment, the Model 1050 behaved the same way. It's output power was also rated for 65 watts into 4 ohms.
