990 -ops- 997 .....thoughts on the anouncement - 09/19/08 02:48 PM

You have been asking for a little news .... a tid bit of information...
well?

From across the pod sitting in Taiwan .... it reads pretty impressive. At this point, Outlaw has heard the rants about bugs enough to mention it in there release letter....

I like what i have read so far ... TI DSPs as the corner stone is a good thing.

Any other thoughts....?

We on the other side of the world are going to bed.... have a good day Gun Slingers and Varments...
and enjoy the reading

Very exciting news!!

I am not as familiar with Trinnov compared to Audyssey. I understand they are taking the 3D approach in positioning the Center Channel. I wonder if Trinnov also processes volume related EQ qualities (Dynamic Volume & Dynamic EQ)??

I love the fact that they are staying true to the design - recent purchase of a 7500 amp...

The announcement also gave me enough fuel to anticipate other small purchases (e.g. balanced interconnects, etc).

I don't think many people are familiar with Trinnov outside a professional studio. It sounds like the first time it will appear in a consumer product will be the R-972 (followed shortly thereafter by the Model 997). From what I've seen in a Sherwood R-972 thread at AVS, the 972 does not appear to have a Dynamic Volume/EQ feature comparable to Audyssey's or to Dolby Volume.

Thoughts on the announcement?

I won't be able to think about anything else until I get my hands on one!

Bought a Bluray player a few weeks ago and already got the go ahead from the wife to upgrade the 990 to something that will decode the new audio formats. Was considering an Onkyo receiver to keep the cost down but with this kind of a price plus the $200 discount I know I would regret any other purchase besides the 997. Can't wait!

When do we think the Outlaws will put out an early order list? I need to start saving my loose change.

One bit not covered in the 997 announcement - will it continue to have a phono input and preamp? Preferably one like that in the 1250??

I did a bit of searching to see if anybody knew about whether the R-972 had a phono section and couldn't find anything either way. These three posts in Home Theater's CEDIA coverage were interesting, but none mentioned phono. Since the 997 is based on the Sherwood platform, any phono section that it might offer would probably not be the same phono section as the 2150 has.

Yeah, I did too and found nothing - which I'll take as "no phono". None in the 997 would be sad news indeed for those of us really interested in musicality. Outlaws, I hope for better from y'all.

Checked the brochure and there does appear to be any mention of a phono for the R972.

Can any of the Outlaws watching the Saloon just tell us whether the 997 has a phono preamp?

The 972 platform does not include a phono pre amp. Therefore our version which employs their topology will not include one either. It does raise some interesting opportunities for our considering an add-on phono pre amp box. However, we have to gauge the interest in such a device.

I wonder how many 990 owners have ended up using vinyl because of their 990's phono input? Certainly having the groundwork in place from the 2150's phono input (an MM/MC pre-amp section), an Outlaw phono pre-amp is an intriguing possibility...

Re: 990 -ops- 997 .....thoughts on the anouncement - 09/21/08 01:58 PM

Does the 997 have a phono input at all or does it need the pre-amp to function?

Re: 990 -ops- 997 .....thoughts on the anouncement - 09/21/08 03:04 PM

Based on what Peter said, it has no phono input - in which case you would need an outboard phono pre-amp.

Oh well, I'll still buy it because I have plenty of other stuff to plug my T-table into. Is the $200 discount for 990 owners for only a limited time. I think I saw somehting that said it was good for the first 6 months the 997 is offered.

Re: 990 -ops- 997 .....thoughts on the anouncement - 09/21/08 04:05 PM

The deal is for both 990 and 970 owners and is for the first six months that the 997 is shipping.

If we assume that a "977" (or whatever name it might get) is hiding in the pipeline behind the 997, 990 and 970 owners who pass on the 997 would have the same $200 discount available for the first six months that unit is shipping. The catch there is that we don't know when such a unit might appear...

I wonder if the HDMI inputs are individually adjustable with the Reon chip as opposed to the global settings of the Integra DTC-9.8 ??
