990/7125 - 08/06/07 05:35 AM

i received my new outlaw 990/7125 combo on saturday 8/4. since making all my connections and powering up i have reset the 990 3-4 times, unplugged and plugged it in several more (waiting 5 minutes in between).. and i have yet to get a menu.... the 990 finally realized it had an amp attached to it and powered it up... i got it to play dvd's and cassettes but the sound is nowhere near the quality of the puny hk i had to begin with.. i have seen flashes of potential but nothing earth shattering as of yet... my patience is being tested and i hate finicky things.. it either works or it doesn't.. why can't i get the menu screen? why can't i get dts? any ideas????

Ah....have you called Outlaw Tech Support?
I guess not.

I've had the 990 and 7125 for a year with zero problems. The menu will always come on the screen, DD and DTS work, and it sounds much better than my Adcom components that I had.

I'm not sure what you've tried (as FAUguy wasn't, either), so all I can do is cover the usual suspects. The on-screen menu is available from the composite, s-video, and component video monitor outputs. Therefore, once you have any one of those three connected to a display and that display set to the associated input, you can press MENU either on the front panel or on the remote (by pressing "TNR" to allow the 990's universal remote to control the 990 and then the MENU button directly above the channel controls) to get access to the setup menu.

Until you have entered the menu and configured your inputs, odds are that the digital connections are not correctly assigned, which would make it most unlikely to get things working properly. You also can't have the speaker levels, distances, or crossovers configured optimally for your system. In fact, I'm rather surprised that you've seen or heard anything worth speaking of without access to the menu.

Does any of that help? If not, can you provide some details on what you have connected so far?

If it helps, we could probably offer some ideas on how to set things up with just a list of components in the system (including the available connections for each, such as component video, DVI, HDMI, coaxial digital audio, optical, multichannel analog, ...). This is the same sort of stuff that Outlaw's support can provide, of course.

Something clearly is wrong, but without the details it is hard to tell what's up. You don't get the setup menus, which is what is needed to properly configure the 990 so that it sounds right in your room, but do you get the on screen messages at the bottom of the screen when you change an input or adjust the volume? THat will help determine if there is something in the video connection that is at fault.

Um, this isn't something so simple as not being able to see the OSD because jcm is expecting to see the OSD via the DVI output (where no OSD signal exists)?

I forgot to ask that, since he didn't say what type of connection was being used. Of course, you BB4TB, if he's using ALL DVI, then no OSD.

So, I'll ask: jcm, what is your connection between the 990 and your video display?
