Auto setup - 01/10/07 09:20 AM

I just finished running the auto setup and I hit save, but it changed the front l/r speaker size from large to small. Will there be any difference in sound and should I change it manually to large? Also, the subwoofer is set to l/r+sub. Should I change it to lfe only? Thirdly, What are your recommendations on speaker x-over for the front l/r, surr l/r and surr back l/r? My speakers are below. Thank you in advance.

Here's my usual recommendation but the active bass aspect of your mains kinda throws this off. You may indeed want to set your mains to large and keep the subwoofer set at l/r+sub. I'm sure the G-man will chime in with some insight as well.

Set all speakers to small. For the mains and center, take the -3 db rating for the bottom end of the speaker's frequency response and round it down to the nearest multiple of 10 and then double that to get the crossover frequency. For example, if the speaker is rated down to 37Hz, I'd set the crossover at 60. For surround speakers, I usually go with the closest crossover setting that's greater than what the speaker is rated at. If the speaker is rated down to 82 Hz, I'd go with 100Hz as the crossover setting. This is just a guideline to get started, adjust to what your ears like best.

With your Gallo stuff, I'd recommend setting your mains back to large (don't worry about that messing up the setup, it won't hurt as the channel trim and distance settings will be the same either way). Whether to use "LFE only" or "L/R+Sub" comes down to personal preference, probably - if you want the sub in the mix when listening to two-channel material (at which point it will be playing everything below the front crossover, even though that data will also be going to the Ref. 3.1's) then use L/R+Sub, but if you want the Ref. 3.1's to be on their own for music then use LFE only.

Your AV's (both the C and the M) look to go down to 55Hz, so I'd use either 60Hz or 80Hz - probably 80Hz. If you do set the sub to L/R+Sub, I'd probably set the main crossover to 60Hz, although you could also play with 40Hz. If the sub is set to LFE only, the front crossover will be disregarded.

cvinfig and gonk - Thank you for your input. I look forward to making these changes tomorrow morning. I must say, this forum is excellent! I just hooked up the 990/7700 at home as well and I feel as if this is a never ending spiral. Once I upgrade one piece of equipment, I have to upgrade the next and so on and so forth. Have a great night.
