Looking to buy 990/7125 combo-Question - 03/18/06 03:37 PM

Hello, I am looking into the Outlaw 990/7125 combo but do have a question. Presently I have L/R front powered Definitive Technology BP2006's, Center powered Def Tech C/L/R 2000, a Def Tech Supercube I, and non powered BP-2X's for surrounds making a 5.1 set up (Call it speaker set up A). I also have 2 in wall Boston Acoustic speakers in dining room for entertaining (speaker set up B). On my Kenwood VR-4080, rated at 110, I can have speakers A or B or A+B. How would one do this with the 990/7125 combo?

My present problem is that the Kenwood is cutting out even at moderate volumes. I have a fan (external) cooling the receiver but I still have the problem. I am not sure if something is wrong internally or if it just does not have enough power for the speaker set up. Def tech says speakers are 4-8 ohms but if given the choice, consider them 4 ohms. Would the 990/7125 set up solve this problem?

Thank you in advance for responses.

Well, with the 7125 you'll have seven channels of amplification and could use two channels to drive the Boston Acoustics. Those two channels could be connected to the 990's second zone, which would allow you to pipe one source to the main system and a second source (either the same one as in the main system, or a different source entirely) to the dining room.

The problem with the Kenwood is probably the result of overheating due to driving a 4 ohm loads - receivers rarely are well suited to dealing with a 4 ohm load. The 7125 is rated at 125W at 8 ohms and 190 watts at 4 ohms - it'll have no problem with a 4 ohm load.

Gonk,

Thank you for the response. I was thinking something similar but needed someone to summarize it like you did to help.

I will most likely make my purchase this week.

Thanks again.

Look forward to hearing what you decide to do, and how the 990/7125 works out for you if you do place your order this week. Oh, and welcome to the forum. smile

I got a 7125 a few days ago and I am blown away by the difference after moving up from a reciever, so its a good idea. I don't see how people would need more than a 7125... but then again, I wear ear plugs at rock concerts.

Lanion... the more power the better. I have easily driven speakers (Ascends) and I went for the absolute most power I could afford. 7x200w rated all channels driven (and I hear this is conservative), with the Sherbourn 7/2100A. My current set-up may not require all of it, but there's no guarantee that won't change in the future... and amps last forever : )

Although I have a 7100, I've driven the 7 channels into a combination of 4 (and maybe lower) and 8 ohm, inefficient speakers without any problems, and with the unit getting only moderately warm. Luckily, I now have a 7.1 system with newer, more efficient 8 ohm speakers, and after several hours of listening to music and/or movies, it barely gets warm. With its added power, I'm sure the 7125 will perform even better.
