990/7125 set up question - 02/22/06 06:36 PM

Hello all, Question for all you experts. I have a Denon 2910 DVD/CD player that I use for both HT and Music. The player is going into a 990/7125 combo, all is well for movies, and my question comes when listening to music. Can I (how) set the 990 to large speakers with no sub for 2-channel listening?

Thanks in advance

If the mains are set to small for movies, they'll still be small for two-channel listening - there's not a way to create multiple bass management configurations.

It may not interest you, but you might be able to tinker with your crossover point and the two-channel sub offset a bit to see if some combination of settings there gets you a two-channel situation that suits you.

Thanks gonk. I will have to mess with the crossover and see if I can get something to work. I enjoy listening to my music with no sub.

The bass management discussions are over my head, will one of the fixes being looked into address my questions?

Thanks again for helping me understand this.

How is your player currently connected to the 990?

Turn Source Direct ON and the 2910 will output full range signal. Connect the 2910 to the 990's 7.1 analog inputs and set the 990 to 7.1 input. See if this gives you what you want.

I don't know of any plans to modify the bass management to allow large mains in stereo and small mains in surround (the arrangement which you are interested in).

If you connected the 2910's stereo analog output to a spare stereo input on the 990 and set that input to stereo bypass you would get a full range signal to your mains, but since your mains are set to small you would also get a signal to your sub - not really a solution in your case.

Bajahammer,
My last pre did what you were wanting and I liked it. I could set everything to small and get your typical results, but if I want to listen to 2-channel full range I could switch to bypass and it was great. No signal to the sub.
I vote for this functionality when they do the firmware update, but who knows what will be released.
I write software for a living and we always have to nail down full requirements, and then code a product. It would be cool if such requirements were spec'd out and released, then their developers could make the appropriate firmware changes. But, it is kind of just a wait and see thing I guess.
