once i recieve it which will be this week .. it will be with
ATI 1506
Tannoy dmt12II mains
tannoy D6c Center
tannoy saturn s8 floorstanding REARS..
have some tannoy system 600 may use for 7.1 but 5.1 has always been enough for me .. i run dual subs .. a custom guy whom i'm partial to .. and a hk 12 until i get my pennies saved for a svs 16/46plus .. really bass is pretty strong at moment .. no more boom needed just some air moving .. where the 16 46 will be tuned almost all unaudible .. 12hz to hopefully 30hz .. my custom runs 30 to 80 strong and rest of speakers take it from there .. usually cut at 60hz ..

They're working out great. I'm just waiting until I can get a decent sub, center and surrounds. I'm holding off until I get my own place, though. My roommate has a problem (RAF as opposed to WAF?) as it is with just those speakers. But I'll be sure to let her know you said they were classy! (But I doubt it will help).

Re: Which speakers and amp(s) are you running? - 07/09/05 03:09 PM

Blaineh, your system description sounds quite impressive. I have liked Magnepan speakers since I purchased my first pair in 1987. At that time I was only interested in the best music reproduction that I could afford. When I became seriously interested in a surround system I listened to many speakers and systems. I even purchased some good conventional speakers in order to have a matched system but nothing seemed to compare to the live realistic sound and imaging that I got from the maggies. I returned to the maggies and I am very pleased. I do use a B&W LCR600 center speaker because I was concerned about the lack of bass capability from the magnepan center speaker. Are you satisfied with your magnepan center speaker.

Re: Which speakers and amp(s) are you running? - 07/10/05 09:52 AM

JohnW
The CC2 is the best I have tried so far, the problem is the mid-bass 160hz (actually I xover at 200hz) is not a good place to send to your sub, it sounds awful if you try it like that I use the ICBM magnapan (which means the center channel xover is doubled, 100hz is really 200hz) in recombine mode. I have a 3 way DEQX xover for my 20.0, and take the low end and drive it through the "mains" input, and hook the center input to the 990 center out, then the ICBM center out to my center amp. Set to recombine. Don't use the sub out. What happens is the 200hz and below from the center gats split betweeen the mains signal out to my bass panels. In your situation, I would use the 990 sub out to your sub, and set the center xover to whatever the MAINS are xovered at. Of course set the mains and sides as normal (perhaps 60/80hz?). Now the center isn't limited by it's lowend response, esentially you have triamped center, with the cc2 at the top, the mains as midbass, and sub as bottom. Of course you could plug in your rears into the ICBM as well, and that will shift some bass to the frount. Still, use the same sub stting as your mains in theis case. The CC3 has a different design in that the middle is flattened, to allow 80hz xover, but I prefer a full curved panel as in the cc2. BTW, I understand magnapan is coming out with a new center speaker based on the 20.1 I think I will be taking one...
As far as subs go, I am using the HSU VTF3 (series 1), it's pretty good. I am thinking about STS cylinders, like the "ultra" in stereo; it has a aluminum cone with kevlar spider. Also, the 20.0 is bi-amped, I am considering tri-amped with stereo subs (quad amped), will be using the 2nd ICBM to split the very bottom again...

Keta,

I've been an NHT fan for a long time too. I'm really pleased with the sound of the T5's, an incredible speaker for the money and I'm getting even more from them with the 990/M200 combo than I could have hoped for. I also have a U1 sub that I was going to run off my center channel but I haven't felt the need for it in my relatively small room and the B5's.

I thought briefly about buying 5 more A1's instead of the M200's and running all balanced but although the price difference for one amp is fairly small when you multiply that difference by five it adds up. The sale price on the M200's clinched it for me so I went with them.

Are you planning on getting a 990? I love mine.

Re: Which speakers and amp(s) are you running? - 07/27/05 11:53 PM

I've recently purchased a house and it seems like I might need to trade my speakers for something a bit smaller in size (due to room constraints).

I could keep larger mains and center, but the surrounds are the deciding factor. I'll have to go from 7.1 to 5.1 (maybe 6.1) if I can find the right size.

How many of you are running something that would be considered small...Anyone have any suggestions for a good setup that is small yet packs a punch for ht and music?

Re: Which speakers and amp(s) are you running? - 07/28/05 03:02 PM

Outlaw Tim,

Here are a couple of brands that may fit the bill:

Totem Acoustic-
Mite- Soft Dome Bookshelf- very small
Rainmaker- Metal Dome Bookshelf
Arro- Very Narrow Soft Dome Floorstander

Dynaudio-
Audience 42- Great little Bookshelf Speaker Soft Dome tweeter
Audience 52- Big brother to 42

Paradigm-
Studio 20- Metal Dome Tweeter bookshelf, I have v1, they are up to Version 3.

Vienna Acoustics- Haydn Grand- Soft Dome Tweeter Bookshelf Speaker.

I really go back and forth with the whole soft dome / metal dome speaker. Totem Acoustic makes fine equipment. I took small to mean Bookshelf size or small floorstander.

Good Luck..

I would post my system, but I dont have a 990 (yet, maybe in the winter)

Re: Which speakers and amp(s) are you running? - 07/28/05 11:43 PM

h/w-
pre/pro: outlaw, 990 (used to be integra 7.3)
amp: rotel, rmb-1095
dvd: marantz, dv8400
cd: nad, 541i
tube buffer: musical fidelity, x10v3 (for cd and ipod)
mp3: apple, ipod
cables-
ic (amp/pro): ps audio, xstream audio plus - balanced
ic (rest): purist audio, museaus
coax: kimber, dv-75
speaker: kimber kable, 4tc
speakers-
l/r: epos, m22
center: epos, m8
sl/sr: epos, m5

(i use a creek a50ir/music hall cd-25/sonus faber, concerto combo as a second rig)

as a note: the outlaw 990 scores high marks on transparency and is very musical when compared to the creek using the m22's. the integra 7.3 sounds like it is playing behind a curtain compared to the 990. there is much more detail and air with the 990 and offers solid and clean bass. very pleased with the unit, given the price and the features that come with it.

Klipsch RF3 x2 (fronts)
Klipsch RC3 II x1 (center)
Klipsch RS3 x2 (sides)
Klipsch RS3 II x2 (rears)
Single SVS 20-39PC+ (sub)

My new house might not allow me to use anything speaker wise except the mains and center and Sub (which might be too much of an eyesore now given the room).

The surrounds are basically too much speaker for the space the areas for their placement can't handle speakers of that size.

How many people here are running smaller sattelites? Smaller than Bookshelf?

I have just received my new Tyler acoustics speakers to replace my NHT VT2.4's, so here is my setup.

http://www.tyleracoustics.com/linbrook.html

Outlaw 990, Outlaw 770, 2 Tyler acoustics Linbrook Signature Systems (the two piece version) plus 3 Tyler Acoustics Linbrook Signature monitors. MAN DO THEY SOUND AMAZING!!!. My NHT's were OK, but these Tylers are stunning. I chose this setup because all of the speakers are based on the Signature Monitors and will therefore be perfecly matched in terms of their timbre, or "voice". The Signature Systems for the front are good from 25Hz to 25Khz and they are pretty efficient as well. I am completely blown away by how good the combo of Outlaw equipment and the Tylers are. I am Bi-amping the fronts as a test to see if I can tell the difference.

Re: Which speakers and amp(s) are you running? - 08/18/05 10:38 PM

Hey, KGV,

How'd the Bassis work out for ya?

I've been working on a 1X12" 600W and a 2X12" 1200W ported subs and a 2X12" 2400W sealed, EQ'd and a 2X15" 3KW sealed, EQ'd and setting up blind listening tests and a host of other objective tests to try to nail the subjective differences.

Love your low end rig!! Some day I'll convince you to dump the adcoms and try QSC RMX series. cool

BTW, I run 4 Rocket RS-750 Sigs and dual RS 200 center powered by Alesis Matica 500 (500 WPC, 4 ohms, bridged mono) for each of the 5 channels.

For the low end, I run 2-2X15" Tumults, sealed, EQ'd, each driver powered by a 1400W bridged QSC RMX 1450 (4 amps total), 2 dedicated 20 amp circuits, each with a Tripp Lite LCR 2400 line conditioner.

I run 1 sub as a dedicated LFE sub and the other as a dedicated redirected bass sub and sometimes, for sheer fun, I run them with a summed signal.

I'm patiently awaiting a Blu Ray victory dance to update my entire theater which will include a 990 to replace the 950.

Bosso,
Chears! The Marchand is a great piece.I purchased the mono version and went to pick it up during my lunch hour to meet the boys.Phil is a great guy.A true hobbiest.

It was so cool to run TrueRta and watch the lowend extend out.I have it down to about -3db@12hz.I'm in the process of selling off my Adcoms for the QSC 1450's. If I can get 400 each for the adcoms it will be a wash. You musy have read my mind. The Adcoms give me full bass but crap out when it gets up to 110db or so.Ed Mullen and I bottomed out the Adcoms on a visit to my house. It was sad.The 1450's will give me the headroom I need to dig down.

Right now there are too many on the web for sale to try and dump em'.Soon enough though.

The BASSIS rules. It will push the 1450's as well as the Tumults.I had them +3db@10hz and it bottomed out the Adcoms at about 90db.They were never meant to dish out those numbers.

Xbox
Panasonic Hifi VCR
General Electric Cablebox
Norwood Micro 30" LCD flat

Line Conditioning:

Belkin PureAV Power Center

Headphones:

Grado SR80s
Shure E3cs

Misc:

Sanus A/V Rack furniture (cherry)
Custom-made Amp Stands (one for Audiosource, other for sub) (cherry)

Cables***:

Various interconnects from Acoustic Research, RCA, Monster (mostly using optical)
3 6ft RCA Component video cables
Recoton 16 gauge speaker wire
12' Impact Acoustics Pro-audio XLR cables (990 to AudioSource modulars)

* I haven't bought all the amps yet. Growing them a few at a time.

** The main source will likely be a Denon 2910, a modded cheap universal player,
or perhaps a high-end used unit from Audiogon.

*** I have not decided on buying pricey cables due to the lengths from
one component to another would make them sky high for me. Most of my
audio connections are optical so I don't see any justification in rca
interconnects, at least not yet. Perhaps I should improve on the
speaker-wire though, maybe Vampire Wire.

In the future I plan on setting up bi-wiring, then later on to bi-amp
the front left & right speakers, use a couple of ASL monoblock
tube amps.

>Mike in Virginia wrote:

I've been using the hell out of it! :-) I bought
it back in Nov. '04 & I've got a lot of premium
cable channels so I record a lot of movies &
series to DVD-R's. It can use DVD+/-R/RWs, so it
has a lot of flexability on what media you use.

I actually had a problem with it back in June.
Basically, it would record to a new DVD fine, but
if I shut off the machine without finalizing
the DVD, later when I turned it back on, it would
say bad disc when trying to read it. You would
normally not finalize a DVD disk right away.
For example, if you were recording Entourage on
a 4 hour EP setting. You want to wait til the DVD
fills up & then finalize it since Entourage is
only 30 minutes long.

There was actually nothing wrong with the disk
either. I called their Tech Support & they gave me
an RMA# so I sent it in & 4-5 weeks later they
sent me another one.

One thing I had noticed in my original is that
if you record to the end of the DVD, it would
not allow you to finalize the DVD for other
players. So you basically had to start over.
However, with the new one they sent me, it must
have a had a firmware upgrade because this is
no longer a problem. I can let it go _past_
the end of the disk, it simply stops on its
own & I can finalize without issue. So the
replacement has turned out to be much more
useful. I suspect all the new ones now out on
the market must have this firmware update but
you might want to run a test if you get one.

Their tech support was responsive too. You can
generally get someone on the line & they'll work
with you through a problem.

I must stress that the DVDs it makes will
have problems or not play on older DVD players,
such as my Apex DVD player. I have another
stereo rig at my parent's which has a Pioneer
57-A Universal Player & the LiteOn DVDs play
great with it. The picture & sound are pretty
decent.

It has the ability to record to cd but I think
it can only do it through the analog inputs. I
own a TDK DA-5900 cd-recorder which is hooked
to my PC by a Xitel & optical connection, so
I haven't really had a use for the LiteOn to
do this. Also, the manual cd record features on
the Lite On are next to nil. With the TDK, I can
prep a recording to wait for a signal, then play
something on my computer. The TDK will then start
recording when it hears a signal & stops
automatically 3 seconds after the signal ends. I
think the LiteOn is manual for start/stop of a
recording, which would be a pain.

Tim, you said "The surrounds are basically too much speaker for the space the areas for their placement can't handle speakers of that size." I'm biased of course - any Maggie owner is and I see there's a good many in this company - but I'd really suggest you look at their web site, magnepan.com, and read about the MMG-W. It takes up NO floor space because it's a flat panel about 38"x10"x1" that's hinged to the wall and can turn flat for storage or out at any angle for use, which allows a range of effects. Look it up. I plan to get a pair, plus their MMG-C center channel.

I looked for a long time before deciding on the 990. I was ready to spend up to 10 grand for a Lexacon or Meridian, but relized that the Outlaw yielded similar performance and features for a fraction of the cost. This allows me to upgrade more often as formats change.

Halo A51 (5-channel Amp)
Two Bohlender-Graebener (BG) 520i (Front Speakers)

Monster Cable AVS-2000 (Regulated Power Supply)
Monster Cable HTPS-7000 (AC Filter)

Re: Which speakers and amp(s) are you running? - 02/20/06 10:23 AM

Blaineh, I read that you (and John W) are using center channels that ARE NOT Magnepans. How is that working out (for each of you)? I am in the process of purchasing Magnepan 1.6s but I am not that please to have a Center Channel that takes up half of my living room (being facetious). I had considerd other Center Channels, however, when I asked the Magnepan dealer about using a center channel other than a maggie they almost all said the same thing. "While it is ok to use a different center channel there may be issues with matching the timbre of the 1.6s." Also, there may be the possibility of the center channel over-powering the maggies. Any suggestions? Or should I go with Gozilla (Magnepan CC3) for the Center Channel and live with it? LOL!

Thanks,

Paladin

I may be imagining things, but the speakers seem to sound a little bit "brighter" and surround sound seems to blend in better. I had two differnt amps (onkyo and adcom) prior to this system. Been playing around some with Dolby IIx music. It seems to work better on some CD's then others. 7 channel stereo sounds pretty good to me however.

Geez, it might be a while but my theroy is set up the audio first since it seems to not change quite as fast. Buy the DVD player and video monitor last as video seems to be rapidly changing and prices are dropping. Got all speakers like new on ebay for 1/2 of original prices. Same with power conditioner. Bought 7500 new just before price went up and will be getting 990/LFM1P within next 2-3 months. If you can be patient, there are some good deals out there.

Infocus SP4805 proj
JVC (all-region) dvd player
Marantz LD player
JVC tape deck

Brickwall tvss/power filtration

Sitting room:
(2) Magnepan MGMC1
Miller & Kreisel MX-700 sub
Marantz receiver, early 70's vintage (but considering RR2150 as replacement)

I'm of the same mind as Guido... invest in the best (as slowly as necessary) in audio, as amp/speaker technology is fairly mature. When you can't wait any longer, buy video. I bought everything, except the 990 and proj, used, at great discount and in excellent condition one piece at a time over about six years. It has tried my patience to do so, but the end result never ceases to put a smile on my face, or anyone else's who visits.

Re: Which speakers and amp(s) are you running? - 08/12/07 03:52 PM

Wow, we sure do have a wide variety of equipment out there. I am really amazed that I am the first person to post using full Sonus Faber for a 5.1 surround system. Although I am a Boston Acoustics sub instaead of a SF as I have not been impressed with the price performance of SF's subs.

If anyone out there is considering Sonus Faber I highly recommend them. I bought all 5 of my speakers used and I have less then $3K in them and they out perform other systems that I have heard that cost 2,3 or 4 times as much. In addition the Electa's with the matching walnut stands are very good looking speakers.

My setup is listed below.

This is the system I put together for my folks. I had to crawl underneath their house to install the wires. The speakers were special order from M&K. It's the S-150 and MX-350. I don't have pictures of my own system yet and wont for a little while. This was gift to my father. He loved it.

SPEAKERS: Center spkr is just a LegacyAudio Silverscreen.
Fronts and surrounds are KEF 107s. In these pictures you don't see the surrounds. Rather the far left and right KEFs are used for my 4-channel inline recordings, which gives the imaging consistent with the performance. I use SBL and SBR on the 7700 to power these.

I'm going to give it my first attempt to put pictures in a posting. I hope this works. BTW my dog likes jazz laugh

I forgot to mention that my regular CD changers and players feed into a MILLENIUM dts decoder. So I can play dts discs from non-dts machines as well. If a signal is non-dts is just passes it unaaltered.

Also there are two Digital Directors (digital auto- sensing/switching. The upper eqpt is for zone 2 headphone listening. Questions welcome. Been doin' this longer than I can remember (wooooops..Alzheimer's ???-what's that) confused

Never had sound this good. My other room has the old Crown ES-224 electrostatics from the 1970s/early 80s. Powered by Outlaw 755. Sounds better than ever.
