990 Bass Management Question - 12/15/20 06:03 AM

Hello..I have an older but goodie the Outlaw 990/7700 combo.
I did not know where to post this as I imagine some people have moved on to other processors.
I just had the 990 upgraded. There was supposed to be an improvement with the bass management. Prior to the upgrade if you set your speakers to small you could NOT have an LFE signal..the choices were yes/none.
I see that after the upgrade I am looking at the same screen however with Outlaws diagram of the bass management showing digital and analog connections for the subwoofer in different modes can I assume that now when putting your mains to small/yes that they are using LFE.
MY MAIN THOUGHT IS THAT I WANT TO HAVE MY SUBWOOFER DO THE HEAVY LIFTING.
I know many here may not be familiar with the 990..I just had to post and find out what others thought about this upgrade.

Currently I have no subwoofer..I am looking.

Thanks everyone

You are probably better off posting in the 990 channel under Legacy Products:

But it sounds like you have the right idea. The bass management matrix for the 990 seems to pretty clearly say that your sub will be used in all modes when setting the front speakers to 'Small'.

You can see that here:

Good luck!

Thank you..I just do not understand “as directed by crossover”, if I have the sub connected to LFE

I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for, and it is a bit over simplified, but:

The crossover tells the system at what frequency and below to send bass content from each speaker to the subwoofer, hence “as directed by crossover”. LFE is the low frequency effects track specific to only movies; in a system with a subwoofer, it is sent out of the sub.

It sounds like, based off of your above post, you are looking to set your speakers to small and have the sub run the bass. Make sure to also set the frequency for your crossovers as well. Otherwise, they will default to 80Hz whether that is appropriate or not for your speakers.

Also make sure the crossover knob on the sub is dialed all the way up so it does not interfere with the 990s crossover setting.
