gear heads... - 01/19/07 10:05 AM

is anyone here a car fan in addition to being a music/HT lover? It's a cruel cruel world for those of us constrained by normal finances. Which to choose on any given day is a tough choice, but I find myself leaning away from cars, modifying cars, etc. and leaning more into home theater. I guess at least the wife can enjoy a nice home theater more than she can a modified car. She flat out doesn't "get" the car thing for the most part. This stuff is an easier sell. However, I sat and watched hours of the Barrett Jackson classic car auction last night and I found myself yearning for a classic Chevelle. d'oh.

My dream Muscle car would be a 1970 Dodge Coronet 440 with the 6-pack! Totally restored they go for around $100 G's. It would be nice to find one in resonable shape and restore it. Then again where would I find the time?????????? I have too much on my plate already, but it is nice to dream.

No "Gear Head" here but check out this link: teslamotors.com. This car is bad ass!! For about a 100 G's you can have one too. Cost prohibitive?? Perhaps. But keep in mind, this company has come out of mid-air to production from 2003 to present so of course the prices are going to come down. Next model (4 door soccer mom sedan) will be in the 50 G range and I have heard they are eventually going to offer the $20,000 car sometime in 2009-2010 time frame. They also offer a "Solar Option" with the purchase of the car that will generate about 400 miles a week. That means if you dont drive 400 miles a week then you're energy positive. (Bye-Bye Middle East!!) As long as it will let me integrate my 990........

The Tesla Motors link? I did - quite a cool little set of wheels. It's good to see companies exploring the limits of alternate fuel vehicles. I also liked the fact that there was some pretty reasonable looking comparison of energy production, with some analysis of how the power generation plant emissions compare to a conventional car's engine emissions. I had a professor in college who used to say "it's all in how you draw the control volume" while pointing out that even electric cars aren't truly zero-emission - they're just producing their (quite a bit lower level of) emissions somewhere else. smile

What's kind of funny is I'm working on two projects at the moment (one a mixed use retail/apartments development and the other a LEED-certified bank branch) on which electric cars have been brought up. The mixed use facility is going to have a few parking spaces on each garage deck with outlets specifically provided for charging electric cars, and the bank branch may get one space reserved for low emissions vehicles (it's worth one LEED point). I don't know of any electric cars in town that will be using the outlets any time soon, but we have a growing number of hybrids rattling around town that might be able to use the special parking place at the bank, assuming that it actually gets put in.

Also consider these cars in development, as reported by CNET:

The Wrightspeed X1 (home page: http://www.wrightspeed.com/ )

The Zap-X (developer’s site: http://www.zapworld.com/ZAPWorld.aspx?id=4472 )

Perhaps by the time I’m ready for my next vehicle, something I can afford will be on the market.

Give the Dog_Lover a 1970 Mustang Boss 302, a sharp looking and very spunky pony. Maybe blue with a black louvered rear window, with them cool Mustang wheels.

Albuquerque got the plant for the 4 door sedan. It looks like the ground will be broke very soon. (April)
