AVS Forum - 12/15/05 06:44 PM

Is it just me, or the particular threads I viewed, but are the members of www.avsforum.com not that found of Outlaw products!?

Not to mention the amount of bickering that seems to happen when an Outlaw product is mentioned.

There are more people who spend a LOT of money on gear there. That, and I think there are a few snobs over there and many times a thread is totally ruined by two idiots arguing. It is still a great forum though and gets a lot of traffic.

Re: AVS Forum - 12/15/05 08:10 PM

Ire toward Internet-direct outfits like Outlaw is far from unheard of at AVS, typically from a small but vocal portion of the population. As Doug917 points out, some of AVS's members have very large sums of money invested in their systems and are a bit insecure about alternatives that might offer much the same performance for less money. Equally common for the small population of troublemakers is a separate interest in stirring up trouble, sometimes for no discernable reason. Outlaw has long been a target, as has AV123. I haven't seen a lot of grief directed toward Axiom or SVS, but I'm also not a regular over there.

I tend to rely on AVS as a technical resource and as a place to get user feedback on products from companies that don't offer forums such as this one (I did a lot of research there on my Zenith HDTV, for example). You do need to tweak your signal-to-noise filters at times, and while you can get some good information from the numerous posters with legitimate and in-depth knowledge you also have to watch out for folks who speak as if they are experts when they may not be.

Re: AVS Forum - 12/16/05 12:44 PM

I am also frequent visitor to AVS forums but the biggest difference for me is the level of maturity. Almost all the posters here are very polite and helpful when they can vs. lots of flame wars going on AVS forums. However there are some extremely knowledgeable forum members over there who write some of the most informative messages. It is true though that they generally are not fond of Outlaw products too much. Many of them are one of the most extreme "bass head" people out there. And also many of them are strong supporters for internet direct companies like SVS, Hsu, Axiom but not much for Outlaw products, go figure.

While I've seen some positive commentary about Outlaw there, it definitely seems to lean more towards the negative. It doesn't make much sense to me either....though I agree with Gonk in that it may have something to do with the "buyer's remorse" of folks that have a lot more dollars invested for similar equipment.

Re: AVS Forum - 12/17/05 02:38 AM

I actually looked over AVS' different forums before I committed to buying Outlaw gear. Thanksfully I didn't listen. There is most definitely a bias against Outlaw products. that's not to say that all posts were unfavorable. For the sake of redundancy, I think a vast majority of these people (likely engineers by trade - no offense) have a hard time swallowing the fact that they bought $5,000+ worth of pre/pro only to hear that the 990 is on par with their equipment. Its not easy spending $100,000 on that new Porsche when a $50,000 Corvette does it better for half the price. That'll stick in your collective audio-snob craw I'm sure.

AVS forums is like of the home theater portion of the internet. If you TV isn't of a certain caliber, calibrated specially buy someone who charges you lots of money, in a dedicated room, with the right sheetrock, wiring, lighting, drapes, and all sorts of other stupid little things you're not worthy and how dare you ask a question about using something that doesn't cost $1000 a port.

Re: AVS Forum - 12/29/05 05:24 PM

id disagree that avs forum is that over the top. you just have to take a lot of what you hear there for what its worth, not much. i apply the same here too. this is a manufacturers website, avs is not, therefore people on here naturally will be partial to outlaw as most have some of their products. the main thing i dislike about this website is the redundancy of questions, i am patient and like to offer advice/argue what i think, but to do it repetitively is beyond my patience.

iardon:

Your not the only Outlaw at AVS however if you've had the same luck as me you may sometimes feel like the only one..........lol.
I am a regular member of AVS and try to help people out whenever I can.
I've seen the Outlaw bashing threads and have tryed to argue them till I'm blue in the Keyboard smile

From what I've noticed their are about 5 very vocal Outlaw bashers over at AVS and they do give a lot of people the impression that Outlaw is not well reguarded.
That really is a sad thing because many people will be swayed by the opionions of this small collection of Outlaw bashers.
I've also noted that most of them are using a Pioneer Elite Receiver as a Pre/Pro.
I see that as a matter of preference and nothing to do with the quality of the products. IMHO Elite Receivers are fine products but are also very warm and laid back and really the flip side of the very (what you put in is what you get out aproach) of Outlaw Audio.
I really believe this personal bias/preference for "warm sound" is why they don't like the Outlaw Products with their Brighter more analitical aproach to sound reproduction.
I personally don't like my sound made warm and fuzzy by my gear(thats my personl bias). I want to hear what is on my disk as true to the intent of the Band and the person mixing it as possible. Oulaw does a commendable job of this IMHO.

Don't let someone elses opinion sway you in any way. Listen for yourself and when you find what makes you happy(By Happy I mean that cat who swallowed the canary grin smile ) then all the reviews or opinions of all these other nuckelheads (myself included) won't mean squat.
Trust your ears and you can never go wrong.

Just my .02
Hope this Helps smile

Re: AVS Forum - 03/16/06 08:41 AM

iardon, I picked up a pioneer elite vsx-72txv and did a demo against my outlaw 990/7700 last night.

I can tell you that even though that pioneer elite is a nice receiver for about 1/3 the price of my Outlaw, in no way what so ever can that pioneer elite vsx-72 compete with the pure clean sound from my Outlaw 990/7700. That pioneer elite is back in the box ready to return to my B&W dealer today.

btw: My B&W dealer also let me demo Rotel rsp-1068 pre and rmb-1075 amp with my B&W 703's. The Outlaw 990 pre Outlaw 7700 amp opened up my B&W 703's with pure and clean presence of the Horn of Maynord Ferguson. Just jaw dropping sweet smile
