5.1 hook-up

5.1 hook-up - 04/15/03 09:27 PM

Just got my new 950 out of the box and was wondering the best way to hook-up the output from my DVD player. My DVD player can do the 5.1 decoding and has six jacks on the back, one for each speaker. Should I let the DVD player handle the decoding or should I use it's optical output and let the 950 split the sound? One optical cable is cheaper than six good RCA cables so I'd preffer to do it with one cable.

Thanks

PS: I'm am slowly getting everyting hooked-up. Boy can a movie sound bad without the center speaker and sub. The sound moves around nicely and then just disappears, really weird.

If your dvd player can do either DVD-A or SACD then you need to use 5.1 out, otherwise I have never really noticed a difference. I would hope that the 950 would do a better job of decoding than an average player could. So my suggestion would be to use either the toslink or coax digital in and skip the mutli-channel in.

Use the coax or optical output of your DVD player for movie playback. Otherwise, you will loose the playback mode options (Cirrus extra surround etc.) the 950 offers, and it's bass management. If your player also offers SACD or DVD-A playback, these will go into the 950's 5.1 "bypass" inputs.
