Is this the correct pre/pro for 5.1?

Is this the correct pre/pro for 5.1? - 01/27/03 09:18 AM

I have a 5.1 system that I will be upgrading from my Yamaha RX-V2095. It will either be a B&K AVR 505 receiver or the Outlaw 755 and 950. As I will continue to utilize only a 5.1 setup for at least the next few years, is the 950 the right pre/pro for me? This system will NOT be used for music. 90% HT/DVD and 10% DSS (sports viewing)

The 950 would do very well for 5.1 when paired up with a 755. There are some features on the 950 that you wouldn't use (Dolby EX, DTS ES, Cirrus Extra Surround), but those 6.1/7.1 processing modes have become standard on most all new pre/pros and receivers, so you'll end up not using them on anything you get (including the AVR-505 ). The combination of 950 and 755 will likely cost a bit less than the AVR-505 even with the need for five extra interconnects to hook the amp up ($2100 plus shipping and interconnects).

Thanks for your response. Its what I thought. Another question, do I need special cables to connect the amp to the pre? Wouldn't high quality RCA type cables suffice? Thanks

You can use whatever analog RCA type audio cables you prefer -- nothing exotic. Outlaw actually makes some nice ones for a reasonable price, although the 0.5-meter length were sold out last I checked.
