Setup help - 10/18/02 12:30 PM

Hello:

Have a 950 and an ATI 1505 5 channel amplifier.

Main speakers are PSB silveri's. Surrounds are polks until I upgrade.

Currently have all speakers small and sub on. Cross over 80 for all speakers.

Sounds pretty good so far really havn't had time to do full calibration.

Any one else using PSB silvers. Should my mains be kept small or changed to large??? Also, is 80 good for crossover???

Thanks,
bp

I'd leave the mains small. The PSB's could probably be crossed over as low as 60Hz, but 80Hz is OK. Depending on their specs, the Polks might even be worth crossing over at 100Hz.

I have Vandersteen 2CE Signature mains that could also live with a 60 Hz crossover. But as soon as I get time, I'm going to put my sub eq back into my system, and then it's just easier to use 80 Hz which is the same as the 5.1 analog crossover.

Kevin, I also have Vandersteen 2Ce Sigs, I was running 60hz cross for the mains, but found I could more easily integrate/balance the 5.1 direct inputs with DD/DTS sources, etc. I also found a point of sub phase adjustment using Avia test signals my sub phase does not go 180 out as it did previously. Not sure if I just found a happy medium but both, err all, DVD-A (and multi SACD), 2 channel bybass, and movies DD/DTS sound great. Well worth the couple of hours it took to tweak the phase on the sub.

Thanks for your help and suggestions,

Brett

Brett- Cool. What amp do you have? I'd be curious as to your level of hiss seeing as how we have the same mains. (I'm still curious if the amp or the speaker matters more.)

In my system, from the mains, I can hear hiss to about 2 feet. 2 Acurus A200x3 amps.

I've got a 755 and some homemade CAT5e plenum cables, biwire. I can hear hiss from my listening position in a very quite room, my wife says I hear things no one else could possible hear, but it's really only noticible from about 2-3 ft from tweeter. I've heard more hiss from way more expensive gear in demo rooms, not that it was acceptable...I've got a red-dot unit and after a couple of weeks of use it actually hissed more than my original 950 from May. I'm enjoying the hell out of the 950/755 combo, add the Vandersteens and a good DVD-A/SACD and all I can say is wow. I'm watching, err listening to Lord of the Rings right now, wow mega sound!

Thank you for saying that. My current red dot seems to hiss more than my original 950 did, even though it sounds great. In fact it sizzles. Maybe that's what I'm hearing.....

A fanatic LOTR fan friend of mine is getting the 4 disc version, we'll have movie night at my house, I hope it has a DTS track.

You're in luck. The 4-disc set will have both Dolby EX and DTS ES tracks (if you want a taste of what you have in store for you, try this Digital Bits review ).
