S-VIDEO problems

S-VIDEO problems - 09/17/02 10:51 PM

When I hookup s-video connections (DVD and Mits 775U S-video VCR) the output (s-video monitor) to my scaler is very unfocus.

I am using a Sony DVP 850 200 DVD player, BetterCables s-video cables. When I by-pass the Outlaw to my scaler the image is crisp. I am using a CS-1 (Focus Enhancement scaler).

Thanks,
clopez

PS I just got my 950 today. I will see what is happening when I hear from Tech Support.

Thanks

You definitely want to bypass the Outlaw 950 for video switching. It does soften and modify the picture quite significantly, at least with the SVideo and Composite inputs that I've tested. (Never used my component inputs.)

Go directly to your CS-1. That's what I do for critical viewing. (I also have a CS-1.)

I would agree,
However my previous preamp worked fine (until the monitor out broke). I would like this to be fixed because it should not degrade the picture that much.

I am checking to see if it an issue with the CS-1 scaler and the s-video output voltage of the 950.

Re: S-VIDEO problems - 09/18/02 05:59 PM

Greetings,

While I read that the Outlaws were not happy with the Composite<->S-Video conversion circuitry, it sounded as if the switching of sources of the same flavor was up to par.

If others are unhappy with the video switching (S-Video and component in particular), I'd really like to hear your stories. I'm newly on the 950 waiting list, and if there are issues, I'd like to learn about them before my number comes up.

Many Thanks,
brainbarker

There are a lot of things I'd like to do before my number comes up.

clopez,

This is an interesting delema. I bought a used 950, with a reported hiss problem, that was shipped to the original owner in May 02. I thought the s-video switching was just fine even though there were reports of it being soft in comparison to a direct connection. The used 950 was then replaced with a red dot unit. The s-video switching on the red dot unit did not seem as clear as it was on the previous unit. I would have kept the first 950 but the red dot unit sounded so much better that I decided to deal with the softer s-video switching. Then again it could be just my imagination playing tricks on me (not the sound part).

We're looking into the issue clopez is experiencing. In all likelihood it is probably a compatibility issue with his scaler. As for the difference (perceived or real) in your units, there have been absolutely no changes to the video circuitry. As a whole we have had no problems with "S" throughput.

Thanks for the report, Scott.

Brainbarker, I've noticed no problems with the s-video switching on any of the 950's I've had in the system. In my case, that's an all s-video setup (digital cable box, S-VHS VCR, DVD, and DreamCast) feeding a 27" Mitsu.

Re: S-VIDEO problems - 09/19/02 01:21 AM

I am still investigating the issue.
Sorry I had committed to other testing so I will look at Outlaw tomorrow or Sunday.

The Outlaw 950 outputs 1.5Vp-p on s-video but the industry standard is 1.0Vp-p. While this may not affect televisions it may be causing the issues with the scaler that expects the 1.0Vp-p for s-video in.

I will not be 100% sure until I recalibrate my CRT projector for NTSC input.

Scott is there a pot that allows us to recalibrate the s-video output to 1.0Vp-p

Thanks

Scott,

You are correct about s-video switching in the 950 not being a problem. I did a test last night, that I should have done earlier, going from direct connection to the Dss receiver to switched connection through the 950 and did not notice any difference in picture clarity.
