Parasound CSE 6.1 versus DTS 6.1/7.1 - 01/08/02 04:54 PM

In comparison to the 7.1 format, has anyone had the opportunity to listen to a system based on Parasound's CSE 6.1? This is an add-on for decoding the rear center matrix info, but does so using something called "Circle Sound." It also has a provision for mounting a center ceiling mounted speaker(s) over the listening position. Just wonder how this might compare with typical format or having rear and side surrounds.

I'm sure real DTS-ES matrix and DD EX matrix decoding vs. circle surround in 6.1 mode would be about the same. However, I have not seen any processors, besides the SMART and the Parasound add on boxes, with the ability to add a height channel yet even though both 6.1 matrix formats are capable of one (no movies have exploited that feature yet).

However, DTS-ES Discrete 6.1 is a whole other discussion since the center back channel is in fact discrete and full range when properly decoded.

The Model 950 will have DTS-ES Discrete 6.1, ES Matrix, and Dolby Digital EX decoding, but I don't think it has any internal set up for using a height channel, nor the outputs for it.

Maranatz has at least two receivers (the 9200 and 8200) that have "Circle Surround." I have not heard it personally, however, I've heard favorable comparisons to Dolby Pro Logic II.
