Why does my LFM1 turn on with my 950 in stereo mode?

I believe it is because the 950 is transmitting a signal to the LFM-1 even in "Stereo" mode. Gonk would probably be able to explain it better with his customary thoroughness.

Two words: bass management.

When the main speakers are set to small, selecting "Stereo" for an input will still cause the 950 to apply bass management to the signal - if the mains are set to small, the selected crossover point will be applied to the left and right channels, and the sub will get whatever information is below the crossover point.

Also, if the mains are set to small and the stereo bypass mode is enabled, the subwoofer will still get a signal. In that case, the left and right channels receive the unprocessed and full-range analog input signal, but a copy of the input is sent through A/D conversion and bass management processing to generate a signal for the subwoofer.

Thanks for the explanations. I'm actually glad to have my sub running during stereo play because I watch TV in that mode and now I can feel the bone-crushing hits during football season.
