Left Main went out???

Left Main went out??? - 06/24/06 11:03 PM

I turned on my amp today and it seems the left main (front) is out...mine is not old and NEVER abused...I listened last night to a movie (Kiss, Kiss...Bang Bang) and didn't notice it was out.
Today...nothing.
I have tried changing the speaker wire and left to right and right to left to see if it was a speaker problem...it isn't...when changing the speaker wire even with the unit off I still got a little static and pop (very quiet) from the speaker but no sound...not on test either...any thoughts or clue???
I use a Panamax Max5100 for protection and all the other channels work fine.

Curious. I can't think of any obvious cause based on your description of events. Did you check to make sure the pre-amp cables were all in place? If both the input and output connections check out and that channel's still silent, I'd give Outlaw a call and get them in the loop.

Re: Left Main went out??? - 06/24/06 11:32 PM

Have you tried switching the front left preout on your 950 to a different channel on the 7100? If that works ok, then it must be the amp. frown

Is it still under warranty?

Re: Left Main went out??? - 06/24/06 11:38 PM

It's still under warranty - I say that with some certainty because even the oldest 7100's haven't gone out of warranty yet. My old 750's just now approaching that milestone.

thanks...it is still under warranty...it is a little over a year old...I have now changed all the connecting cables and still no sound from the left main...right main sounds fine...hmmm...the owner's manual says there are fuses inside...is this for all channels or not something I should check?...don't want to open it up and void my warranty... frown

I even tried a different DVD/CD player to see if it might be that...I have placed a ticket with the Outlaws... frown

Re: Left Main went out??? - 06/26/06 06:58 PM

gonk,
...of that I have no doubt...well, as I surmised...there is a separate fuse for each channel...Steve called me and emailed me about this...asked if I was comfortable enough to open the "patient" up as the 7100 is a pretty robust design and check the fuse...as the left main is the first fuse in the line...
I just got home from work, opened her up and...the left main fuse is burned inside... smile
...on my way to pick up a "T6.3L 250V" fuse...
Thanks all...I will report back the results but you already know how this story ends... wink

There will be no joy in Mudville tonight!...after finding the #1 fuse broken inside, I went to my nearest Radio Shack and got an exact replacement (4 pack)...the excitement was building, I hurried home and replaced the fuse...checked the connections and contact!
Followed by a loud electronic hummm, a pop and smoke...I left a voicemail with Steve but I believe the patient is in need of critical care.

Sad in Brookfield...

A pop and smoke - frown Never good when you let the smoke out. It was certainly worth a try, at least. Sorry to hear about the sick amp, silversport.

Steve and I have been playing telephone tag but he has left messages and been very helpful...I tried the left main speaker into another channel and all went well...not a speaker issue (I had tried the speaker on one of my two channel amps as I thought this might be a problem too)...

Steve has been great...sadly the 7100 needs to go to the factory but hopefully my HT will be back, up and running in the near future...
Outlaw service has been FANTASTIC thus far...nice to know but hopefully you will never need to.

I bet that FedEx guy didn't know how lucky he was that you didn't have a 7700 waiting for him. wink

It's great to hear the Outlaw's are taking good care of you. It's times like this that the best companies really distinguish themselves.

Re: Left Main went out??? - 07/22/06 08:40 AM

It arrived Friday evening...brand new exterior box...got it home and started hook up...the unit looks brand new...got to hear it "fire up" (this time no smoke wink )...then guests came over...I will give it a proper listen later but so far so good...NO CHARGE...under warranty, but no explanation as to what went wrong or what was fixed...I will report back on that after I hear from the Outlaws...thanks again ALL!

Re: Left Main went out??? - 07/26/06 09:13 PM

Alright...I heard from Steve today...it seems that the tech "found two blown fuses and a bad output transistor. In his opinion it was not a short circuit at the speaker terminals (as was thought) but simply a transistor that failed, taking the fuses along with it. Most dead channels are a result of accidental shorts, unfortunately failures like what you've experienced are rare but can happen. Your amp was put through the same battery of tests that a
new amp goes through after it was serviced to ensure that it meets spec for distortion, linearity, and bandwidth. Please let us know if you have any additional questions or concerns."

I received excellent follow up to my questions, quick and thoughtful trouble shooting (hoping to avoid me sending the unit in for repair) and a quick turnaround of my amplifier. I am very happy with my treatment and hope none of you have to meet the Outlaws in this manner but if you do, I am confident your treatment would be the same.
Thanks,
Bill
