7100 versus Receiver - impressions - 03/18/05 12:39 AM

I just got my 7100 bstock last week. First off built like a tank, I couldn't believe this is the lightest Outlaw amp. Others have mentioned the improved sound quality at high volume, but I hear a great difference in the sound quality at low volume. The low volume quality of my system has bugged me since moving from two channel receivers to home theater receivers, no longer. For home theater this amp really excels, the rear surround channels are crystal clear (I have 5.1 setup) and center channel dialog is equally clear. I was worried that 100 watts would be enough, but the difference between the 100 watts in the 7100 and the 75 watts in my receiver is like night and day, more than enough power for my fairly efficient speakers.
Any complaints, only that it seems to run a little hot, but I haven't had any problems with overheating. Thank you Outlaw for a great amp, I can't wait to upgrade to a pre/pro.

My 7100 used to get pretty hot also and now my 770 gets pretty hot. I ordered a pair of cooling fans on Ebay . I kind of have it rigged with a cheapy fan now. What kind of receiver are you using ?

How hot is "hot" in these cases? For example, in wingnut\'s entertainment center , I would not expect there to be a need for cooling fans in light of the very good volume of free area around the amp. The heat sinks in the amp are going to give off heat, so the air above the amp is going to be warm, but if we are talking about the air above the amp being somewhere in the 90's or even 100F I would not see a need for any supplemental cooling. Obviously, cooling fans won't hurt anything, but I also wouldn't be concerned about some noticeable warmth above the amp.

Hi Gonk. There is a lot of space but the rising heat was REALLY warming up the Sherwood. Even my roommate was concerned. My cheapy $4.77 Wall Mart solution is working really nicely to keep it cool but it is way too loud.

The amp works best for me on the bottom for wire management so I will just use the fan for now. Hopefully the 'real' cooling fans will be quiet.

That makes sense - I'm guessing the tight space above the Sherwood is limiting its ventilation, which probably wouldn't make much difference if there wasn't a power amp directly below it. As for the wire management, I've got my gear arranged the very same way.
