No output on 1050

No output on 1050 - 03/09/06 03:58 PM

I recently purchased a used 1050, which was sold as being functional. When it arrived, it powered up, but no sound comes out of the speakers, and the front panel is very dim. I was wondering if there were any pointers to things I might check to see if I could fix them easily. Unfortunately, shipping the amp to outlaw is something I'd prefer not to have to do, as I'm in alaska, and shipping is rather rediculous from here...

make sure it's not in 5.1 direct, check that it's not on a digital input(if using analog input),make sure the speaker impededance switch on back is either 4 or 8 ohms ,not stuck in the middle.those are the first things that come to mind.

I'll offer some ideas that you may have already done, so ignore them if this is all old news. Can you access any of the setup controls? (For example, you should be able to press "SPKR" and see the front panel display change as you set the mains, center, and surrounds to large/small/none and the sub to on/off. Likewise, "XOVER" will let you adjust the crossover setting.) If so, that would at least indicate if the 1050's "brains" are still up and running. If that works, the next step would probably be to make sure the inputs are set up correctly - making sure that the input is set to the correct digital input if it is connected with a coaxial or optical digital cable or to the analog input if it connected with stereo analog audio cables (change what an input is set to with the "DIGITAL INPUT" button on the remote while that input is active). Another way to test is to hit the "TEST" button on the remote to get the 1050's internal test tones. If all of those come up empty, I'd suggest giving Outlaw a call - they may be able to help you narrow down the source of the problem.

I've tried the test button, I've tried the 4 and 8 ohm switches. I've tried each of the various inputs. Everything LOOKS like it works, but nothing makes noises come out. I also checked the fuse, and it seems to be ok.

Very odd... Definitely give Outlaw a call. It's no longer under warranty (the 1050's been discontinued since late '03, so the two-year warranty would have to be expired by now), but Outlaw's customer service is great and may be able to help without you having to ship it real far. I'd also quiz the seller about it, although that may be a dead end.

I've already gotten what I'm going to get out of the seller. I'm hoping this is salvageable, so I kept it. I'll give them a call.

Any news on the no-sound issue yet?

My 1050 just started exhibiting sound dropouts, and the tuner is all but useless. I tried a CD through the DVD player's digital coax and started getting the same condition. At times the sound sounded distorted as well. Steve gave me a few suggestions that I will try over the weekend. It will need to go to the Outlaw's for proper diagnosis and, possibly, repair. I'm now thinking it may be time to move up to the latest audio decoding formats, but the 1070 is too $$$$ for me.

Nope, I haven't even begun to think about it at this point. I may just cut my losses and use the parts...

what's the seller say? Did he sell it as in working condition or what? If he did.. then he should help you solve the problem.

He did, and we worked out something I was ok with. I'm not concerned about that at this point.
