6.1 Decoding - 03/31/01 11:42 PM

The 1050 manual states that the 1050 will decode a DD 6.1 soundtrack. Will it also decode DTS 6.1 information?

No. I think the new preamps will. DTS uses a descrete rear chanel, DD uses a prologic type decoding info from side channel material. The advantage in the DD is that rear channel material can often be derived from 5.1 material.

Thanks, that's what I thought.

I think there's a way to get the 1050 to extract rear center channel information from a DTS ES (NOT DTS 6.1 Discrete) using an outboard decoder and feeding the 5.1 output in through the 1050's 5.1 input. At least that's what the review in Widescreen Review said. Probably not worth the effort, though. The new preamp/processors are supposed to decode DTS ES and DTS 6.1 Discrete, and (using Outlaws proprietary 6.1 format) Surround EX soundtracks.

OK. Isn't it great, the surround sound formats just keep changing. I'll probably buy one of the new preamps when they are released, and sell my 1050 on Ebay. Until then, my 1050 is still kicking butt on the competition!
