Bass Mgmt and DVD-A on 5.1 direct

Bass Mgmt and DVD-A on 5.1 direct - 01/03/03 11:58 PM

I was just reading through the manual, looking to see which were the tape outputs since I can't read the labeling on the unit itself because it is too close to the wall, when I saw a paragraph stating that when surround 6.1 is selected, and you are using the 5.1 direct input, you WILL get bass management. I was always under the impression that 5.1 direct only went through the volume control and bypassed all other functions. If this is true, I'll give the DVD audio a try with this. I would do it now but I still haven't bought any DVD-A disks yet. The titles are pretty pathetic, mostly recycled stuff from the 70s and 80s. I mean, do I really need Hotel California in surround? I think I'm going to look for my bell bottoms.

Just be aware that the 1050 will be performing A-D conversion prior to applying the Surround 6.1 and bass management, then D-A conversion. Not saying that it isn't worth a try (since it sure can't hurt to give it a shot), but just pointing out that it's going to add an A-D-A conversion that you may or may not want to do with a DVD-A source.

I knew that would be the case. What sampling rate does it use to convert? If it is less than DVD-A, I'll be losing something in the translation. And even if it does sample at a high rate it couldn't possibly be as good as the original mix. It is only a $500 receiver after all.

I tried that trick but I still didn't get any bass output. I was curious even though I do have rudimentary bass management in my SACD player. If it works let me know.
