What's the new amp?

Re: Hurry up... - 10/04/05 07:33 AM

Similar to the 770, but its faceplate will match the 990 pre/pro, and it will have balanced inputs. Rumor has it that it's a full balanced amplifier design as well.

Similar power handling to the 770 as far as we know, so the 770 is still a great deal.

For the truly power hungry they're also planning to release a 300Wx7 amp some time in the near future.

Re: Hurry up... - 10/04/05 09:44 AM

I talked to Steve maybe about two weeks ago and he gave me the impression that the future was pretty distant for that new 300W amp. When that one does come out though I will be keeping a close eye on the reviews. My Polk LSIs salivate at the thought...

Re: Hurry up... - 10/04/05 10:48 AM

I'm really hoping the future for the new generation 770 is a lot closer. I think we're right near the far end of the "6-8 week" figure we were given back at the beginning of August. Hopefully we'll hear something soon.

Re: Hurry up... - 10/04/05 11:46 AM

The 770 and 755 replacements are probably a good deal closer than the 790 (which is the 300Wx7 beast) - the 790 got sent back to the drawing board because of heat management problems with the original design, and the impression I got from earlier in the summer was that the 790 was being basically re-designed from the ground up. The replacements for the 770 and 755 should need less design effort, which coincides with the 6 to 8 week timeframe suggested back in August.

Re: Hurry up... - 10/04/05 05:01 PM

Yeah, I was hoping to order the 770 replacement asap, and also get a combo deal to go along with the 990 I bought. Combo pricing for a 990/770 is 200 off, which I hope they might allow for a short space between the 990 purchase and the availability of the new model (pays for the cables). While looking at the pricing sheet, I noticed that when buying 5 or 7 2200's, there must be a mistake, or they're giving 300 off when buying that many. Quite a deal if not a couple of typos.

Re: Hurry up... - 10/21/05 10:09 AM

With the cost of the 770 going back up, does that mean that it's replacement is stalled?

Re: Hurry up... - 10/21/05 11:31 AM

Perhaps - or perhaps they're getting ready to introduce the replacement. Until we hear something from Outlaw, it's impossible to say for sure.

Re: Hurry up... - 10/21/05 01:39 PM

I threw in the towel waiting for the new amp and ordered a 770 at the discounted price. As much as I wanted the new amp, I couldn't really justify the extra money for a matching faceplate and a balanced design which would be of questionable value to me since my amp and preamp are very close.

... I hope this thing comes with free hernia insurance.

The 770 is showing up as "discontinued" today.

Re: Hurry up... - 11/03/05 02:56 PM

Wow - they're both gone now... I wonder when the 7125 and 2200 will get some new company on the product page.

(EDIT: Hello, 5000th post. You're a little fella, aren't you?)

Re: Hurry up... - 11/03/05 08:14 PM

I just noticed that they discontinued the 770. I ordered the 990/770 combo on Monday, set to deliver tomorrow. Can't decide if I made the right decision to get the 770 or should have waited for the replacement. Any thoughts??? eek

Re: Hurry up... - 11/03/05 09:35 PM

I think the 770 will work just fine for you - not only do we not know yet how long it will be until the replacements start shipping (an indeterminate amoung of time during which you will be enjoying your 770), but the replacement will likely also be more expensive. I don't think there's a need to worry about buyer's remorse with the 770.

Re: Hurry up... - 11/04/05 03:47 PM

I ended up doing the same thing. I was originally holding out for the replacement 200Wx7, but in the end I decided I needed the ~$400 more than I needed a matching faceplate and balanced inputs. And I wanted it sooner rather than later, so it was a no-brainer.

I've had mine up and running for a week with my 990, and overall I'm pretty happy. I watched something last weekend where I heard some distortion at a couple of points during the movie, so I'm trying to figure out where that's coming from. I haven't been able to replicate it yet though.

Re: Hurry up... - 11/05/05 02:43 PM

Well, got the 770 Amp yesterday, got everything hook up to the 990. Worked fine...for about an hour. Listening at a lower than normal volume and heard 3 loud "POPS" coming from the left surround. That channel is gone because I used another channel to check that it wasn't the speaker. Hopefully, it didn't do any permanent damage to the speaker. All in all, when I had to leave a message on the ansering service that I probably won't get a response until Monday, I am not at all happy. Next I get to lug that heavy back upstairs that nearly killed me getting down. Sorry for the venting!

Re: Hurry up... - 11/05/05 03:35 PM

Wow, that is some bad luck. I hear you about sending the 770 back as that is not something I want to do (fortunately have not had to in the 3+ years I have owned it). On the bright side, maybe this was a sign telling you to wait for the new amp. I am sure Outlaw will take care of you, but that does suck.

Re: Hurry up... - 11/06/05 05:43 PM

Damn, that sucks. However, my experience with Outlaw's service has been positive. One of my LFM-1 amps failed a couple months after I got it. They shipped me a new amp with no questions asked and it took me about 5 minutes to swap it in. Perhaps you'll get lucky and they'll be able to send you a new card for that channel instead of shipping the whole thing back and forth.

Cheers,

I wish they would release info and start selling the replacement to the 770 already...

Re: Hurry up... - 11/26/05 08:12 AM

Just a footnote on the service level I received on the repair of my 770. Both Scott and Steve did a fantastic job getting my 770 back to CA and repaired the bad channel and had it back to me in about a week and a half. A new one could not be sent because there are none left; however, this one is back working like a champ and I couldn't be happier with my purchase. Thanks guys!
