2 channels to subwoofer? - 05/07/03 02:16 PM

I have my 770 front channels to Axiom M80ti's, center channel to Polk CSW404 and surrounds to Polk RTi38's. I therefore have 2 spare channels. I am rebuilding my subwoofer and changing my enclosure from a 54L sealed adire alignment box to an 85L vented sonotube tuned to 20Hz. I'm using an Audiosource Three amp in mono at 400 watts into the Shiva 12 inch driver for the sub. I will be moving this driver into the new vented enclosure.

Do you think I would be overtaxing the two 770 channels if I ran them each into one of the two 8 ohm voice coils of the Shiva driver? I currently am running the bridged Audiosource into a the two 8 ohm voice coils running parallel as a 4 ohm load.

Thanks,

Ian

Hi Ian-- If it were me, I would just wire your Shiva voice coils in parallel, and run it with one channel of your 770. IMHO, the Shiva doesn't really need much, or any more than 200 watts to work really well. If you haven't seen this, you can read what Adire has to say about wiring up their dual voice coil Shiva driver. Of course I realize that sub type, enclosure size, method of construction, vents, or no, etc. all come into play in determining how much power is needed to achieve the best results. By the way, I have two Shivas in sealed enclosures which I drive with an Adcom 555 II. I like 'em! Best wishes...
