950 Static Noise?

950 Static Noise? - 07/31/06 09:22 PM

Hello. Newbie to the forum here.

I picked up 950 about 8 months ago in the used market. I actually picked it up at a pawn shop, beleive it or not. All has been working well, or so I thought. I recently noticed a static sounding noise on some high frequencies. I noticed it on an opera track when the female singer's voice hits a high note. I originally thought my amp (Rotel RB-985) was clipping. I was just about ready to buy a new amp, but I did some more testing and was able to isolate it to the 950. Here is what I know:

-My 950 has no dot on the back
-The static sound happens only in high frequencies
-It sounds like static and the sound cuts out for less than 1 second at a time
-It happens at all volumes
-It happens with ananlog, coax digital, and optical digital connections
-It's annoying
-Speakers are Paradigm Studio 20 v.3 Xover 80 Hz
-It happens with different sources
-Subwoofer in use

I've read of other sound issues with the 950, but I haven't been able to tell from the descriptions if I am having the same problem. Does anyone have any ideas?

Also, how good is Outlaw's customer service for non-original customers?

The problem you are describing is not one that I've heard of others running into. If there's no dot on the back, it's probably a blue dot version manufactured after the blue dot revision was added to the design. Even if it's a pre-dot version shipped in April or May 2002, however, it's still in the five-year warranty period - and the warranty is transferrable. You can contact Outlaw and they'll help you work through the problem - and if it means getting the unit serviced, just give them your serial number and they'll take care of it.

Thanks for the info! I did not know they stopped putting the dots on. I figured that meant that it was pre-revision. I will call them today (If I can break away from work for a few minutes). Good news about the warranty and CS!

Yeah, the dots were only applied to units that had the revisions made after leaving the factory. Units that were manufactured with the revisions never got the dots - although you're definitely not the first person to get confused by the 950 dots. smile
