Multi-channel Input Problem

Multi-channel Input Problem - 09/14/04 08:16 PM

I've had my 950 for a few months now, but have just got a SACD/DVD-A player. I'm having trouble with the multi-channel input. I don't get any sound from the center and surrond channels. Using the test function on the 950, I get sound from all speakers, but
using the test function on the DVD player, I only get sound from the left and right speakers and the sub. I know the DVD is putting out a signal on all the channels 'cause I connected the surrond outputs of the DVD player to the analog CD inputs of the 950 and got sound.

I keep thinking I'm doing something stupid but don't know just what. HELP!!

BTW, I've tried just about every setting in the speaker selection menu, large, small etc, but with the same results.

Anybody have any ideas?

make sure the settings on the dvd player are set to dolby digital.also, have you played an SACD or dvd audio disc in it yet? they may not be multi channel discs some aren't, also, you are hitting the six channel bypass buton on the 950 when you try to play a sacd correct?

First of all, thanks for the quick reply. Much appreciated.

Let me get right to the conclusion here. I toggled the 6 channel input on and off several times and it magically started working. So I'm happy for now.

Now to answer your questions, yes I was using the 6 channel input. But wasn't using a SACD but the speaker level setup in the DVD player. It' similar to the test function on the 950. It sequences through the 5.1 channels one at a time. And yes the SACDs were multichannel. I've now verified that by listening to them. Great sound!

Thanks again for you response.

There is a quirk in the six channel analog input that causes it to only output the left and right channels if you switch to the six channel analog input from an input that is operating in stereo mode. If you toggle to the six channel analog input from a source running any sort of surround mode (Dolby 5.1, DTS, Pro Logic, 5/7 Stereo, whatever), you will get all six channels.

Didn't know about that. I'll remember it. Is there a fix for it other than to toggle from a surround mode?

I guess in Microsoft lingo that would be called a 'feature".

Thanks for the info
