Delayed Setting for LB(BS) & LB/RB in 6.1 and 7.1 setup

Delayed Setting for LB(BS) & LB/RB in 6.1 and 7.1 setup - 10/11/03 12:56 PM

I had my 950 for about a year now and love it,however I'm puzzled that I couldn't find a delayed setting for LB(BS) or LB/RB surround in 6.1 and 7.1 setup.
Shouldn't these speakers have their own settings too?
Can someone shed some light one this subject?

The 950 is designed to have a single delay setting for all the surround channels.

Thanks for inlighting me, but uh, question... in discrete 6.1 DTS-ES mode wouldn't that have an negative effect on the discrete LB(BS)channel....as it will no longer be a discrete channel?

"Discrete" refers to the content played back in the channel, not to the time delay performed by the processor.

Surround mavens go back and forth over the delay settings. A single surround delay seems to work fine in my system.

Those who perceive that they need more control over delay settings will need to consider a different processor than the 950.

Understood, question, is the distance from the listening area for your LB(BS)greater than that of your LS/RS? If so how would one compesant for the greater distances of the LB (BS)in terms of the delay of sound reaching the listening area at the same time?

You can't compensate; not with 4 speakers and one delay setting.

Next best thing: find the surround speaker that is closest to you and enter that distance for the surround delay. The other speakers will get a bit more delay then needed. This won't be a problem because, when it comes to time aligning the surround speakers, it is always better to err on the side of extra delay rather than too little.

Sanjay

Mr D, I have the same problem as you. My rear surround is 4' away, and my side surrounds are 7' away. I followed Sanjay's advice, and have been very happy with the results. I can't tell you how many times I've been watching a movie and almost gotten off the couch to look out the window to find out where that sound came from

I always used the average distance, and that seemed to work OK too.

The exact delay is not really critical at all. The whole delay thing started with Dolby pro logic which had high leakage from the front to the surrounds. The delay was needed to make the surround signal seem to more convincingly come from those speakers, and keep dialogue leakage from the center channel from being heard at the rear. With Dolby Digital and DTS, the leakage issue does not exist. The sound effects and music that is typically mixed into the surrounds is non-correlated with the signal in the front channels anyway, so delay is an non-issue.

Thanks Guys for the much needed imfor on that subject!
Now, what kind of speaker works best in that position...another main, center or surround(I have dipoles on the sides of my listening area)?
