OPPO DV-981HD cables - 10/14/07 12:38 AM

I use this player for DVD playback but would like to use it for SACD, DVD-A's (5.1 & 7.1) and audio CD's. Can anyone recommend decent quality cables for this unit at a reasonable price. This player costs $230 and I don't want to pay more for the cables than the player.

Check out http://www.bluejeanscable.com/

I've always found them to offer good quality cables at reasonable price.

When you are talking about buying 6 or 7 cables though, there's not really any cheap route.

6 cables at 6' each from them runs about $120 total after shipping. 7 cables is $140.

That's still cheaper than your DVD player though. smile

Whaat would be the downside of using seven of these?

Those look like digital cables. You should be using audio cables for hooking up multichannel SACD.

So not sure how that will affect the sound or if it will at all...

Basically it's a question of how much signal loss and/or crosstalk you might get with them.

But for $35 or so for the set, not much to lose I suppose...well other than $35.

I'd still play it safe and get the Bluejeans cables, but that's just me.

Using coaxial digital cables wouldn't hurt anything. For all intents and purposes, tey're just analog cables rated for 75 ohms. I'm using Blue Jeans cables between my 980H and my 990 - specifically, two sets of their component cables (which are identical to their composite and coaxial digital cables). They'll work fine.

I have found CABLES FROM THIS SOURCE to be excellent.

Get the Bettercables Silver serpent Reference HDMI cables. They will auction them off on Ebay so go hunt.

Make sure your unit can pass that signal along the HDMI. I feel using analog is better especially if you use a high end DVD player.

I am currently trying to cable my system as well. I have the Oppo 981 as well as a newly purchased 970 and thought I read that to pass the SACD signal from the oppo you had to use the HDMI output. If so how do I hook it up to the 970 to get the full affects of the sacd output.

To output SACD, you need to use either HDMI or multichannel analog. In the case of the 981HD paired with a Model 970, you will need to use multichannel analog. I would connect either coaxial or optical for regular CD's and DVD's, and then just use the multichannel analog for SACD's. The setup section of my 981HD review might be helpful in discussing this, but the 981HD's manual is also quite well written and worth a read in this regard.

Nice reveiw.(Is the dog pictured giving it's initial impressions as well?? I have a dog that is as, or more, excited for me to open new boxes.)Thanks for your continued support for the hobby and in particular this site. As you can see I'm digging up some old questions as the kids have moved out and I'm getting back into the hobby. The Lord,Wife and money willing.

Glad you like the review. That's actually a cat. Of course, Hagrid was a Maine Coon, so it's not hard to mistake him for a dog.

The Dayton Audio line of interconnect cables from Parts Express are also good quality at a very reasonable price. I'm very happy with my set of balanced and unbalanced analog and optical digital cables and will buy more when the need arises.

A word of caution regarding cables using silver-plated copper wire. This wire is very prone to corrosion known as "red plague" in the electronic industry. Microscopic imperfections in the plating combined with moisture lead to corrosion that disintegrates the copper core. This condition is known to exist even in mil-spec silver-plated wire, so I expect it could exist in audio interconnects. Wouldn't be too pleasant to have an expensive acquisition self destruct, unless you plan to replace your interconnects every few years.
