Balance Interconnect Hum - 09/24/06 11:41 AM

Ok. Here is a mystery. My system has been pretty quiet as far as I can tell and I have been lucky with no ground loops. Why is it that now, when I try XLR connections from my amp to my pre, I get a wicked hum? I thought that if anything the balanced connections were supposed to prevent such a thing?

Balanced connections should be very resistant to interference and noise, so I agree - that is a bit odd. Do you get anything similar with unbalanced connections?

The RCAS are pretty quiet with the exception of my SAT setting on the pre. On that setting I can hear a very faint hum with my ear directly against the speaker.

It sure is a mystery.
when running 990/7700 unbalanced I had a noticeable hum. Running balanced...no hum.

Here's something that doesn't make sense to me...and maybe gonk can explain: When runnign the 990 and all the same equipment in the same installation...with the only thing different being my 755 (which is unbalanced) there was NO HUM.

Don't understand.
