Okay, this may seem like a silly question, but I am confused if the 976 should be switched off (standby) every night, or is it okay to leave it permanently on? Thanks.

Thanks. Will do -- I am happy the 976 doesn't make loud clicking noises when switching on and off (unlike Marantz SR5010 - I am using it's amp section with the 976 for now, speakers being very efficient at 92 dB).

Stand by, warm circuits sound better than cold ones, or so I was taught back in the day!

Is it normal for the 976 to generate heat in standby?

Yes, it is still operating in a very low power mode and if not properly ventilated could cause a problem.

If you have HDMI control switched on, or 'HDMI audio to TV' set to on in the menu, then the voltage regulator circuits remain powered up and your 976 will generate the same amount of heat in standby as it does when it's on. As Xenonman says, make sure it's properly ventilated.
