Was at Home Depot last night and saw that Intermatic has a surge suppression box that mounts to your electric panel. It cost $40 and protects all of your power lines from voltage surges!

The two electrical engineers at work got some similar units from a vendor a couple of years ago, but last time I checked with them neither had gotten around to installing them. It's a pretty cool idea, especially for those older houses (like mine) that don't have grounded receptacles, making "power strip" surge suppressors useless. I've contemplated something similar a time or two, but never done more than think about it.

What is it with this? 6 mths ago, I fully intended to get main panel whole house protection on line. Still have a (7th) speaker in a box. Still have an uncalabraited display....and on and on.

SO many toys (and chores) so little time.

I actually have one of these. I installed it back in '92 when I bought the house. You will have to call the power company to shut off your service while you install it. If you are not confident of your abilities (I did construction with my father in my teens and twenties) an electrician can probably install it in about 15 minutes. I like the idea of having several "layers" of surge protection, especially for sensitive and/or expensive components.
